Sunday Sketch I Emma

This week, Emma (SC username, emma_kw), is joining us and sharing her FOUR takes on our layout & card sketches! Emma's style is bright and fun and we've been loving her work in the gallery lately. We couldn't wait to see her work with the sketches!

First, let's look at this week's sketches - our 12x12 layout comes from Lisa Truesdell's A Little Bit Wild layout:

And our card sketch comes from Chari Moss' Love card:

And let's see how Emma took on these two sketches:

When I was asked to take on a sketch challenge I was so, so, so excited; but I admit once I saw the actual sketch it may have stressed me out just that little bit at first. A double page! Not something I’ve tried before.

I scrap in 6x8 layouts at the moment and I love it. I’ve been working on PL exclusively for the past 2 years but I really wanted to do more this year and I just couldn’t deal with all that space on a 12x12 layout. I happened to have some pieces of 6x8 left from the DD kit so I tried it and haven’t looked back. Handbooks are the perfect size for me! I tried to stick to the sketch layout in terms of placement but took some liberty with the number of photo’s and grouped some blocks in the sketch to incorporate a larger photo in my layout. I left one photo in colour (so I could use my favourite paper out of the kit!) while the others are in black and white to help the main photo pop. For paper I knew I had to use the orange because it tied in with the photo’s I was using (and it was my fave) but I didn’t want it on both sides of the layout. I’ll always love plain grid patterns, they go with everything, and it is on the back of it so I used it for my “main page” with the journaling (this is where scrapping in 6x8 is handy, I get to use both sides without needing 2 sheets of the same paper!) and used the orange with the B&W photo’s. I know I’m a bit late to the party but I love just stars at the moment. LOVE. And because the orange was screaming at me just a little too loud, I cut stars out of vellum and put the reversed paper (the sheet left over after weeding out all the stars) on top of the orange to tone it down a bit.

Not sure if you will notice but I messed up the graph card… To make sure I got the spacing right before printing onto the actual card, I scanned it and dropped it into Photoshop so I could then type the wording on top. This is one of those cards that you cross your fingers and toes so that it print’s straight because it’s the only one you’ve got and you can’t afford to mess it up. Imagine then that you’ve set it up, looks good on screen so you send it to print. Its printing away but after a minute you think, “Hmm, that’s taking a long time to print just words…”. Then you stop and get this slightly sick feeling. You just realised you forgot to hide the scanned image before you sent it to print. So I’m printing a scan of the card onto the card! Yeah…not my finest moment. Luckily it didn’t turn out too bad so I could still use it.

Once I had the photos and journaling down it was just a matter of filling the spaces with a few simple embellishments and I called it done! (Which sounds like I finished this quickly, but I didn’t. This took me days to get right before sticking/sewing it all down…ha!).

Supplies: Sugar Rush PL Kit, Cherry Sours PL Add-on, Sugar Rush Scrapbook Kit, Sugar Rush Paper Pad, Wanderlust Uppercase Alpha Stickers, Essentials Chipboard Stars – Yellow & Orange, 4x3 Grid Cards, More Vellum 12x12 10 Pack.

I changed this up a bit and made the layout more grid orientated to suit the series of photo’s I wanted to use (random selfie shots from my son that I found on my camera, love little surprises like that!). I used the blue/mint papers with pink (!!!) to break it up a bit. I love the colour pink but I rarely get to use it on boy layouts. He’s already seen this layout and let me know that “boys don’t have pink mum!!” The photos are not the greatest (must teach him how to focus the camera, haha) but they are part of the story and they are so Zack.

Supplies: Sugar Rush Scrapbook Kit, Sugar Rush PL Kit, Ring Pop PL Add-on, Sugar Rush Paper Pad, Color Theory Sequins Pack – Platinum Status, LemonLush Chipboard Thickers – Glitter Triangles , More White 10 Pack, Basic Grey Candy Buttons (silver).

The card layout came together a bit faster. I’m not much of a card maker but Chari’s card was so beautiful that I didn’t need to overthink the placement too much and I spent more timing thinking of a theme than anything! I don’t get to use pink too often and the heart paper in the paper pad is cute so I went with that as my background and everything else was picked to co-ordinate with that. The sentiment is actually out of the Sugar Rush PL Digital Stamps set – I find myself using the digital stamps more often and just creating my own cut lines in the Cameo!

Supplies: Sugar Rush PL Digital Stamps set, Sugar Rush PL Kit, Sugar Rush Paper Pad, White Card Bases & Envelopes, random pink ribbon I had lying around from who knows where!

I thought I’d give the card layout another shot given I really actually enjoyed putting it together. I went with landscape format this time and used the starburst paper out of the paper pad then just popped some stars (left over from the SB sketch layout) on the top in clusters of three to match the sketch and picked a cute sentiment from the Sugar Rush Card Digital Stamp set. Not exactly a match to the sketch but this one came together in record time (15 mins, which is super-fast for me!) and was more for fun than anything!

Supplies: Sugar Rush Card Digital Stamps set, Sugar Rush PL Kit, Sugar Rush Paper Pad, More Vellum 12x12 10 Pack, More White 10 Pack, White Card Bases & Envelopes.

Would have never noticed the printing on the card had you not pointed it out. Love the pages and your cards. Great use of the vellum stars.

Here is my card for this week.

Great sketch! A little intimidating with all those photos, so I did a one page layout. Here's my take: http://www.studiocalico.com/galleries/114295-montara-beach

I used the card sketch as inspiration. Didn't stick to the exact outline, but I guess you can tell what the inspiration was:
