Mix and Match Project Life®

It can be hard to strike a balance between keeping up with a Project Life® album and other crafty endeavors. We often hear from members that they're worried that starting Project Life® won't leave them enough time to do layouts - or from Project Life-rs that would love to try their hand at scrapbooking but don't know that they can take on both. Luckily, this doesn't have to be an either or situation - you CAN do both! And you can even include them in the same album. Here are some examples from our Creative Team :

Marcy Penner :

Barbara Picinich :

Kelly Noel :

I love that I don't have to choose either/or but I can choose both! I love that I can be creative by mixing them. I am for sure doing this!

This is my mission for 2014, ha! I just love this idea, especially when I am trying to scrap event or trip photos. Instead of trying to cram them all in I can do a pocket page with the extras.

This is how I do project life. I still get the thrill of crafting 12x12's yet the ease of displaying daily life, and lots of photo's. Great post!

I love these! I do this in the Handbook and make 6x8 layouts next to my PL pages.

Interesting that Lisa blogged about P/L the same evening that I decided to extol this form of expression although I have had little to do with it before this.

When I subscribed to the card kit (which is my main interest), I noticed a number of things. I rarely saw card displays in the gallery, it wasn't clear what the "norm" was for the number of cards for a display (scrapbook displays are one or two pages, the card displays I've seen are few and are only about 4-8 cards, and P/L displays are almost entirely missing (sorry to those who do put up P/L work in their galleries)).

I began wondering about this. What's up with P/L products that keeps their creators from displaying their accomplishments? Hmmm. It's an unusual format and broken up as it is really requires more than two pages to get the creator's point across (I'm throwing out hypotheses--you can disagree or agree).

It's actually TOO MUCH like a photo album whereas the IDEAL scrap page is as far from a photo album as one can get--isn't that the point? To idealize the photo album and make it art?

The P/L kit breaks up the monthly concept into small pieces and presents it that way. The other kits aim and/or encourage some level of abstraction and/or integration of the concept.

The P/L display is like a series of one-liners: a pre-made card, followed by some exemplars and photos. Yes, in my life, what's in this card happens to me too! Validation! The opportunity to see how other P/Lers treat the same materials.

The cards are almost like ATCs. Add a monetary value and we can join together on Friday night for a friendly game of P/L poker. Rules to be determined.

The P/L kits are just plain fun. You have cool cards to write on, play with, sort, order and reorder, talk to others about and so on. You have a P/L group to discuss the meaning and value of this month's kit. You can invite guest P/L creators who can provide insight into their process, either working with the kit by itself or in terms of how the kit led to insights working with the other kits for the month.

My proposal: P/L kits have the potential to bring the community together at various levels. To wit: all members should subscribe to the P/L kit. Mandatory. The P/L kit forms the core of the SC experience. Other experiences are possible but optional. If you pick P/L kit only, you should have a pretty well explicated theme for the stuff in your kit. Every third Friday, there will be an online meeting to discuss the themes the P/L kit and how they evolved in your thinking. If they lead to other concepts in other kits, argue for the relationship. How did the P/L kit lead you to the realization that is reflected in your scrap kit display or your card set? Was your scrap page or card set enriched by the P/L kit or not? How?

I haven't been here long. I see some attempt at cross-connection via a common theme (e.g., last month's concept was "office hours"). How was that concept reflected in the various displays? No one really said, "I depicted this month's theme, "Office Hours," by............" Would anyone know the theme had been Office Hours unless someone had labeled the kits that way? What made the P/L OH kit different from the Card OH kit and/or the Scrapbook OH kit. And how about all those add-ons? Do add-on "winners" (sorry, that's the way I think of them right now) end up with a different world view than the "losers?" Are they in the corporate world vs. the small business sector in this example? I realize this gets a bit out there but labeling something doesn't make it so. Think about the theme as you work on your kits this month (although I have no blue grass experience so I'm automatically handicapped--help!!). I usually combine 2 or 3 months and then see what makes sense with those parts put together. (Interesting, office hours held by cows on a mountain top....)

Actually I think the theme sort of disappears the closer we get to the next Sneak Peek and ordering process. After all, is any of this about meaning or just about the other M?

I'm ready to sleep. Good morning to those on the east coast!
