Weekly Challenge | Tracy

This week, our member Tracy (username tracyxo), is challenging you to use a vellum overlay. We're excited to turn our weekly challenges over to the SC community! Check in each week as we ask one of our members to inspire you with a challenge based on one of their projects from our member gallery. Be sure to follow Tracy here at SC to see more of her work and keep up with her!

Hey guys, Tracy here! I'm super excited to be hosting the Weekly Challenge on the blog this week! For this Project Life spread, I focused on what I had done over the weekend, which included some shopping (yay, pretty things from Target) and a movie with my mom (yay, Divergent). I love including pieces of vellum in my layouts as vellum is one of my most favourite things whether it's to add some journaling or to mute a photo or patterned paper a little bit. It's important to me that I also incorporate bits of pop culture throughout my album because it's apart of my life and something I really enjoy. Years down the road, it'll be fun to look back on what I liked to read or listen to or movies I went to see.

Along with the ticket from the movie, I decided to include a photo from Divergent that I cut out of a magazine which I grabbed from the theatre. I wasn't that shucks on the colour of the photo - it was too orange/brown and I didn't feel that it fit well with the rest of the colours in my spread. So, I took a 3x4 piece of vellum, cut down from a sheet of 12x12 vellum from the packs Studio Calico has in the shop, and placed it over the picture. Unfortunately, then it made it too hard to see the actors. I thought of cutting the vellum in half to be 3x2 but then had the idea to take a 2 inch circle punch and have their faces be the focal point. I really like how it turned out and it's different from anything I've done before.

My challenge to you all this week is to use a piece of vellum as an overlay on a photo! You can use the vellum to add some extra journaling or even a punch to cut out a shape to focus on one aspect of your photo! Just remember to have fun with it! I can't wait to see what you guys create!

Now it’s your turn to create a project based on Tracy's challenge! Share your new project for the challenge in the SC gallery (add the hashtag #SCchallenge to make it easier to find!), then link up your project in the comments of this post by April 21st to be entered to win a $5 gift card to the Studio Calico Shop!

Love this challenge! I have done vellum overlays in the past, but never journaled on it. What a great idea ... will have to try that :)

Totally inspired me - thanks so much

I used the fun stamp from Tabasco on vellum to create an overlay over part of the photo on this layout.

I need new vellum! I got a couple of sheets at JoAnn's, and it's not sheer enough. Lesson learned. It's a good thing I was making a cutout anyway!

I know I don't count for the challenge! But I love this technique and I think it looks really awesome. Just wanted to share where I've used it recently myself :-)

I decided to take the challenge and made a project life card for my album using vellum to tone down a very bright picture. I used the SC star dies to cut out portions so you can see the pic underneath.
