Weekly Challenge | Inspiration with Jamaica

This week, our member Jamaica (username jamaica), is challenging you to create a project based on an inspiration piece. We're excited to turn our weekly challenges over to the SC community! Check in each week as we ask one of our members to inspire you with a challenge based on one of their projects from our member gallery. Be sure to follow Jamaica here at SC to see more of her work and keep up with her!

I made this layout for a challenge Tina Aszmus and I set for ourselves on National Scrapbooking Day. Since I haven't made an actual layout in ages, and I'm a very slow crafter, challenges are a great motivator for me. They get me started and help keep me focused. After bouncing around a few ideas, I pulled up two images I'd pinned recently—this pin for art journal inspiration and this one for my dream gallery wall. Neither are obvious scrapbooking inspiration pieces, yet both were stuck in my mind days after I'd pinned them. I figured if they're that memorable, there's something that will translate to a layout.

For me, it was the mix of colors and patterns arranged on a light background. The obsessive organizer in me went straight for a grid and used some small scraps of my favorite papers as well as the Egg-celent card from the Easter add-on and some extra photos. Tina took a less literal approach, artfully arranging an array of elements across her page. It's fun to look at both layouts to see how we were inspired by the same pieces yet interpreted them so differently.

My challenge to you is to look thru your Pinterest boards and find an image you love, whether it's a gorgeous pink frosted cake or the perfect shade of green paint in a kids room, as long as it's not a scrapbook page, and use that as your inspiration. Don't over think it. Just find a pin that resonates with you, regardless of whether you think it'll translate easily, then figure out what it is about that image that attracts you to it and use that as the basis for your layout. Oh, and have fun!

Now it’s your turn to create a project based on Jamaica's challenge! Share your new project for the challenge in the SC gallery (add the hashtag #SCchallenge to make it easier to find!), then link up your project in the comments of this post by May 19th to be entered to win a $5 gift card to the Studio Calico Shop!

Ohh this was a really fun challenge! I used KP's first sketch to create a page based on this pin's colors, repetition of shapes and lots of circles.

    I love this challenge!

I made a quick and easy card using some banner pieces from my stash, twine, stamps and embossing powder, and paper.

I loved the gold "eyelets" on the shoe and the pink that is paired with it. Super cute!

I looked at it and figured out the reasons why I LOVE it………
    1. The colors: teal, yellow, white, gray, brick
    2. I also liked that it was centered (which is strange because most of my layouts aren't)
    3. i liked the simpleness of it

And here's the layout I came up with:

I really had so much fun with this layout! thank you so much!

Inspired by art from Molly Hatch, who does ceramic plate painting. Here is just one of hers: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/554365035354425316/
I love the way she takes one image and spreads it out seamlessly over 16 circles.

Love this challenge - I have a pinterest board where I pin random images that inspire me, but I never seem to go back and look at them. I picked two that have stuck in my mind - they both are of buildings with windows/balconies in light/bright colors. I especially like the first one that varies the size of the different colored rectangles. TFL
