Learn to Make a Pinwheel for Your Cards + Use a Silkscreen Mask | Dana Fleckenstein

Hi everyone, Dana here with a step-by-step tutorial on how to work with the silkscreen mask in the Carolina Moon Card Kit and how to create a simple dimensional focal point for a card.

Now, I always look forward to the specialty items in the card kit like, for example, the silkscreen mask. These challenge me and give me permission to learn (and mess things up on occasion). I've worked with this particular mask before for a CT gallery project (see it right here), and I will walk you through the steps to create something similar.

Step 1 - Gather your supplies for screen printing (paints, a pallet knife or plastic card). Cut a piece of cardstock to roughly the width of your mask and adhere the silkscreen mask to the cardstock piece.

Step 2 - Put a pea size amount of Color Theory acrylic paint on the plastic card to spread the paint over the silkscreen.

Step 3 - Lift the silkscreen up, clean a bit if necessary and repeat step 2. You can layer and use multiple colors for these steps if you want. Don't worry if you get little paint drips here and there. You can always make this look intentional with some confetti style Mister Huey sprinkles afterwards.
Important: Before you go over to the next step, clean your mask, especially when working with acrylic paints. They dry fast and will be hard to remove from the mesh.

Step 4 - Cute one or two square pieces of cardstock or patterned paper (double sided works best) for the pinwheel. Score the squares on the diagonal and cut them in maybe 2/3 of the way from each side.

Step 5 - Fold every other of the corners in like on the picture below.

Step 6 - Add smaller foam adhesive squares to the pinwheel so it keeps its shape and doesn't deflate when it goes through the mail. Find a cute button or flair button to layer over the pinwheel and glue it down.

Step 7 - Decorate your screen printed cardstock mat with enamel dots. Adhere the cardstock piece to your card base and finish the card off with the pinwheel.

Supplies: Carolina Moon Card Kit, Color Theory Acrylic Paint Emerald Green, Color Theory Acrylic Paint Yes Peas, Color Theory Enamel Dots Blue, Mister Huey's spray mist gold (sold out in the shop), Color Theory Mint Hint Mini Mist

Thanks for the tutorial, Dana! I need to make a few birthday cards this month, so might use this screen print on them.
