Member Challenge | JilC

This week, our member Jil (JilC), wants you to create a layout by making kit contents work for you. Our members are so talented and we love seeing your work in the gallery! Check back each week as we ask one of our members to inspire you with a challenge based on one of their projects from our member gallery. Be sure to visit Jil to see more of her work and keep up with her.

Hello, everyone! I’m excited to be here sharing this week’s challenge. I loved the Savannah kit, but I’ve learned that to make some kits really work for me, I need to be flexible and ready to cut, punch, cover, mix—in other words, to alter some of the elements to suit my purpose and style. In the case of this page, I changed the “Pink makes me happy” sticker to use it as part of my title on this layout about the good times my dog and I have together. I also used a 4X6 card from Ali Edwards’ Heart story kit on a layout instead of in the traditional way in the pocket of a documenter spread. I made this page after using most of the paper from my Savannah kit, so I mixed in papers and tags from my stash, yet another way to stretch a kit or to make it your own.

So my challenge to you is to look at the contents of a kit and decide how you will make it all work for you, no matter how unlikely a piece might seem. Do you want to change its shape, its wording, its color, its traditional way of being used? Go for it! And be sure to share. I can’t wait to see what you make!

Now it’s your turn to create a project based on Diana's challenge! Share your new project for the challenge in the Studio Calico gallery (add the hashtag #SCchallenge to make it easier to find!), then link up your project in the comments of this post by March 14 to be entered to win a $5 gift card to the Studio Calico Shop! This week's challenge winner will be announced in the March 19 Layout of the Week post.

I love every single thing @JilC makes! Thanks for the challenge.

I used lots of pieces from Savannah Documenter and SB kits, cutting journal cards and stickers, using word stickers as a border, and piecing things together. The background papers were from my scrap stash. http://www.studiocalico.com/galleries/185341-sweet-birthday

I used every last letter from the Savannah kit as my background and cut a few pieces of my least favorite papers to fill in the spaces. Also used as many of the stickers I could get on the page. Homespun arrives today and I want to kill the kit.

I trimmed down a label for the date. I also made a tag from one of the cards in the DK kit, and punched a little heart out of another.
