Tutorial: "You're My Sweet Bee" Card with Carson Riutta

Happy Thursday, my SC friends! I'm excited to share a video with you today which walks you through the techniques and supplies I used to create my "You're My Sweet Bee" card that was posted at Reveal in the Creative Team Gallery. I absolutely love Jasmine's Bug stamp set from the Scout release. Of course I adore all the fun and funky bugs, but I also love that the non-bug images are so versatile. For this card, I used only one of the small flower stamps to create a floral background colored with reinkers and water.

I used all the supplies pictured above which include: Stamp – Bug by Jasmine Jones; Die - You're Sweet by Jasmine Jones; Ink – Versamark Ink, Studio Calico Color Theory Ink Refills in Blush Crush, Well Red and Sunny Day; Paper – Canson Watercolor Paper; Other – White Embossing Powder, embossing powder tool, heat gun, paint brush, stamping blocks.

I hope you enjoy the video and I hope you'll get a little inky and try a similar technique on your next card.

A few more things to keep in mind, should you try this yourself:

  • The embossing process can take some extra time and patience, but the lovely end result really is worth the effort.
    • SC ink refills are super saturated with color, so one little drop is more than enough for a project of this size.
    • SC ink refills are not water soluble again once they have dried, so with that in mind, work quickly while the card is wet for best results.
    • Don't overwork your watercolors. The best outcome of this technique is that your embossed flowers will have a lot of color variation, but if you keep working and blending your watercolors, then your flowers will eventually all take on a similar shade of orangey brown.
  • Thank you for watching today, and I wish you all a weekend full of sleep-ins and craft-nights.

Love the tutorial, thank you! So pretty and I love working with water colors so much! My favorite part of your video was hearing the birds(especially the cardinal) singing while you worked! So nice to be able to do that while you craft... So relaxing and uplifting!!! Thank you Carson!

Nice to see your video, I always have problems with my Watercolors not looking splotchy enough. Good tips. I too enjoyed the birds.

So glad you enjoyed the video @Brinkleyboy and @CeliseMcL . I didn't even have the doors or windows open, so you can imagine how loud the birds are in our yard! I love them too, and feel very lucky to be able to craft near a big picture window with their songs and the sun streaming in. The key to splotchy, Celise, is definitely wetting down the paper beforehand and working quickly while it's still wet. With enough water your colors will bleed into one another and bloom beautifully!
