I had tried to read it about a year ago and all the Swedish names/places annoyed the heck out of me so I quit.
But I picked it up again last week and I am SO glad I did. I've finished the series now and am so sad that it ended. I read somewhere that he had originally planned it to be a 10 book series. So bummed about this.
So anyway, if you had a hard time with it, like I did, give it another shot. It rocks. :)
OH MY! JEN! These are my favorite BOOKS ever! I read those about a year ago.
It was VERY difficult to go through the first 200 pages of the first book!!!! But I'm glad I HOLD ON reading because these just ROCK! Oh my ! Isn't Liesbeth just the BEST character you've ever seen???
Vee, definitely READ the books before watching the series or the movies, but once you're done with the books, definitely WATCH THE SWEDISH eerie as it is THE BEST :)
I've been trying to read the first book for so long.. I would read 20-30 pages and put it back.. After few days, I'll pick it up again, read a bit and put it back on shelf... Ugh! I know it's a good book, but I'am just not able to finish it! I'am gonna try again now :)
Try again!! I felt the same way...it was so difficult to get through. But once you get through the first 100-200 pages? It flies. I could not put any of them down after that, I finished all 3 in about 4 days.
Totally agree Jen! I had trouble getting through the first half of the first book but am glad I stuck with it. Love Lisbeth's character and am excited to see where she goes (I haven't read the next 2!!)
I loved this and like you it took me over a year to finally read them. Had a tough time getting into book 1 at first. Now thinking about re-reading them before the movie comes out.
Can you believe I felt this way about The Help. I returned it to the library because I just couldn't get into it. After I saw the movie I bought the book and had no problem getting through it.
I'm stuck on starting the 3rd book (just too big to lug around!) and worried I'll have forgotten the backstory. I don't think I could watch the movie, though--the imagery would be too scary on a screen for me.
book 1 was hard to get into initially. the swedish names and places were so confusing! but i persisted, and once i got past that, i couldn't put it down. i have book 2 + 3 at home but haven't started them just yet.
my sister and i already have a date to watch the movie dec 21!
Strange cos I didn't have any trouble with Book 1, but I definitely loved the books! I dunno if I want to watch the movie, cos it might spoil it for me. lol..
This is good to know. I am picking this up from my library to read. Yet again, a series I wouldn't normally be attracted to but likely one I won't be able to put down, eh? (at least, after I get to page 200 I won't be able to put it down, lol).
I read it over last christmas while visiting the inlaws...i was kinda trapped (hehe) so I stuck with all the books and LOVED them...best books I've read in a while!
SO agree...one of the docs at work gave it to me after he read it (we always have similar tastes in books, so we swap them once one of us has read something we love!), so i felt obligated to push through it even though i was having a hard time.
ENDED UP LOVING IT.
:)
Same here, got the books from my MIL and she made it clear I needed to get through the first 100-200 pages and then I would get into the book. She was correct. Loved each book.

I want to read this series before watching the movie!!! I hear it is awesome!! :) How many books are in the series?

Vee - 3 books from the serie.
Can you tell I'm a HUGE fan? :)

I tried to read the first book and couldn't finish it. Maybe I'll try again!

And yes Celine - Lisbeth rocks!!
I'm still stuck on the first 100 pages, I've been meaning to go back and get past it --
thanks Celine, it is a tv show too???
I enjoyed books one and two but have tried to read the third one three times and it just is not grabbing me. Is it worth the effort?
Number three was my favorite. It took a bit, but then ending is TOTALLY worth it.
I agree with Jen and Celine...I had a lot of trouble with book one. Only the first book is hard to get into....I had no trouble with the other two.

Vee-yes there is a swedish tv show that is just amazing! The girl who plays Liesbeth is incredible!

i gave up too after 230 i think last year, but it was during a hard time so i really struggled. Maybe i should pick it up again

i have not read the last one yet. it is on my list. i loved the first 2!
