As promised, here's the info you need to get your silhouette library onto two computers WITHOUT using your download attempts. But, just so you know, Sil support are really good and if you do happen to have to re-download your files four or more times for legit reasons and explain this to Sil support they will happily reset your downloads for you. Provided you explain, they'll reset it multiple times for you.

    Onwards with the show!

How To Have Your Silhouette Library On Two Or More Computers At The Same Time.

Caveat: This method requires you to pick one of your libraries, or your more up-to-date one and replace your other libraries with it. If you have files on your second computer that are not on your first, you WILL lose them. You can use the re-download button to get them back, but my advice would be (from now on) to always download to one computer only and keep that as your main and then when you sync, you'll never lose any files. This means you can always purchase files on your other computer, but be sure to download to your designated computer only.

What to do: find (on your preferred computer) where the Library folder is stored depending upon which OS you have:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
    Windows Vista: C:\Program Files\Silhouette Studio\Resources\Resources\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
    Vista 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Silhouette Studio\Resources\Resources\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
    Windows 7 64-bit: C:\Program Data\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
Mac: Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
(I don't have a Mac so I can be certain with the Mac address so please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Copy that "com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8" folder without opening or changing anything in it, then load it to a thumbdrive or go through your network to paste it to the correct area (see above if you're using different operating systems). Replace all the duplicate files if it asks.

Open up your Studio software on your second computer and you should see your library with the same structure you have arranged it in on your preferred computer.

You should copy and paste that folder as often as you feel is necessary, because as soon as you download any new files it changes. Just like any backup system, you should set up a schedule that is the right timing for you in order to maintain and keep it up-to-date.

I hope this helps, and because I know this is an oft asked question could a moderator possibly make this info a sticky? Thanks!!

Thanks so much, I have been trying to do this and it wasn't working with the directions I had. Your direction are so clear. I will follow them and hope it works.

I tried it and it works. I put the library on my new comp. which runs windows 7. I did have to follow the same directions you gave for Vista for Win 7. I tried the other way but it didn't work that way. I also realized that when you are done you need to restart the computer. I'm a happy camper.

    You're all welcome :)

deejcarter, not sure why it didn't work from your Win 7 to Vista, it should have!! I personally went from Vista > Win7 and then Win7 > Win7, but I know of others who have done Win 7> Vista and it's worked... odd.

Hi, in Windows 7 the files need to be replaced in two locations. I have a blog post about this here: http://www.scrapsation.com/backing-up-your-silhouette-files/

Ok ladies, I'm going mad. I did this process 4 months ago and it worked, but this time i can't get it to work. I am now transferring from vista to Windows 7 and tried putting the file in both places and i just can't get it to work. What could I be doing wrong. I would love a button that said back up library and you push it and another to say transfer library. Please HELP!

I migrated from Windows Vista to Windows 7 in July and it also did not work for me. Turns out the folder I was copying (with the above instructions) was not the right one. That folder was empty and didn't have all my files that I've purchased in there.

I ended up finding the right folder and copy and pasting it this way and it worked.

Copy the Silhouette library folder from old Windows Vista computer at C:\ProgramData\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8 (the whole folder) to an external drive or flash drive.
On the new computer, put the folder you just copied into
    C:\Program Data\
    and ALSO C:\Program Files (x86)\Silhouette Studio\Resources\resources
Then I restarted the computer, opened up the Silhouette Studio software, and it opened with all the library files.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm bookmarking it.

QUESTION though....when i buy files in the Sil store, they automatically download to the computer. How do you keep them from downloading once they are purchased? I guess if you don't buy them via the software, but just an internet browser?

    thanks again!

I can not get this to work!!!! I've tried it several times on to two different computers and I am not getting the library with all my downloads. As well, there is now a new folder in resources - SPEC-332. This must be with the new software upgrade and it wasn't there when I tried this previously.... I am using the same version of windows on both computers. Any further suggestions???

Lilash - I also can't get this to work. I'm going from Windows 7 home to Window 7 pro. I see the com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8 file both in program data and program files on Windows 7 pro, but I don't have the program data folder on Windows 7 home.

I also see the new SPEC332 folder. So, I copied the whole SPECSS2 folder from the 7 home computer within the resources file, and placed in the same spot on the 7 pro computer, but when I open my library, there is nothing.

It's clear that all of my cut files are in the standard shapes folder under the SPEC SS2 folder, but they come in without the .studio part so they are not being recognized.

    Any thoughts?

I don't have a cameo yet, but if I'm reading this right you can transfer the files to an external hard drive or flash drive. Is that correct or am I mis-reading it? I will be getting one soon and just want to know if that's an acceptable way to back up files in case of computer or hard drive crashes.

  22. Betsy Gourley
    Betsy Gourley says…

I think that's right Scrappy, but you have to get it loaded onto the other computer.

  23. listgirl
    listgirl says…

@scrappydigido - yes, the files would be safe on an EHD for backup.

Betsy, the Program Data folder for Windows 7 Home is a hidden folder. You have to check the 'show hidden files and folders' option in folder options to see it and therefore get into it.

As for the SPEC32 thing... let me go and play. I've not applied the update because as far as I can tell from my friend, it's not been a good one, rather an unituitative release by Silhouette they say. But I have two computers, so I might be able to work something out... brb!
