can someone help me understand the differences, please? I see some of the older machines on ebay and craigslist, and I wonder if it is worth going for them. Thanks!

The Cameo can cut 12x12, so full page frames, some say it cuts smoother. Otherwise, the software is the same. I do believe the older model used multiple blades while the Cameo just has one.

I own both the original Silhouette & a Cameo. They do use the exact same software. :) All the files are the same. The original Silhouette had a different blade system. Basically you used caps that screw on/off the blade housing to regulate the depth of the blade. With the Cameo they went to a ratcheted blade system. But they were smart about this change and the newer blade fits & works with the older machines! YAY for backwards compatibility!!

My original machine has all the same capabilities as the new Cameo with two exceptions. It only cuts 8.5 inches wide. Mats are therefore sized differently. Also, the original Silhouette does not have an SD card slot. The Silhouette SD & the Cameo both have the option of cutting without being connected to a computer via the SD card. Honestly this isn't a feature that I have used. My limited understanding is that you store the design you want to cut on the card and then can cut without the computer. I can't answer about sizing and what not because I've just never tried it on my Cameo.

If you are considering buying an older machine, you should ask the seller if they used the print & cut feature and how well did their particular machine detect registration marks. This is the only area that I felt my older machine was beginning to fail in. I don't have nearly the trouble with my Cameo that I did with the 5 year old original, detecting the registration marks for successful print & cuts.

Best of luck to you! :)

I have a Silhouette SD I bought new at the end of 2010. I have *never* used the SD card feature ;) It does do Print and Cut but sometimes takes a few tries to recognize the registration marks. Otherwise, I like it (but I don't scrap 12x12 so I don't need the size of the Cameo.) If you can find this one in good working condition for d say buy it unless you really need the 12x12 of the Cameo?
