I have both and my P & S is a Canon Elph100HS. It's a good little camera, but the noise really bugs me. Are you happy with yours? What do you have? What do you like? What do you dislike about it?
I'm trying to determine if there is one I'd like better. I get decent shots, but I find myself frustrated at times with its limitations. But of course, I don't want to haul my DSLR everywhere with me.
I, too, am interested in favorite point and shoots as we need to replace ours. I never use ours anymore, but I do tire of caring around my DSLR and would love a purse sized p&s. Input please.
i would love an iphone just b/c the quality for pics is great! my p&s (canon sd1000) is old and the quality of pictures has been deteriorating as of late. when i first got it, it was great, but i think it's just time for an upgrade. it's just not the in budget right now.
I have a point & shoot, DSLR and smartphone and the camera I never use is the point & shoot. I take it on vacations and actually get good use out of if there (it's great to take when going on activities on vacation because I don't bring a purse and would never bring my phone); other than that I never use it at all. If I know I'll take photos I don't mind taking my DSLR around with me since I have a camera bag/purse thing. Plus, I never use the flash on my DSLR so if I am somewhere where taking photos is a little weird I don't feel like many people notice b/c a flash isn't going off (whereas, it always is with point & shoot :)).
I have a DSLR, and I use a Nikon Coolpix s550 and while I love it for daytime shots, it doesn't do real well without the flash in dusk type lighting. We used to have a Canon Powershot, and I must admit that was my favorite p&s ever - until it went swimming with me. It didn't work so well (read not at all) after that.
We bought a PowerShot SD960 IS almost 3 years ago. I keep it in my purse all the time. My only complaint is the shutter lag (compared to my digi Rebel).
I just bought a new point and shoot this week as my old one was really just dying a painful slow death. I am super picky about the p & s cameras I buy. I have an iPhone 4 and the pictures to me are just too noisy and prone to blurring unless you use the flash or are in bright outdoors light.
I am still playing around with it but the past couple of nights I have taken low light pictures with no flash in auto and they look great. I am looking forward to spending a little time with the owners manual to see what it can do.
I bought a Sony NEX 5N to use as my p&s. It is NOT cheap but it's smaller than my DSLR and has high quality images. I really wanted something I could throw in my purse because there were times I was missing stuff because it was too much of a PITA to bring out the 'big camera'. It's hard to find a bag for because the zoom lens sticks out so far but if you shoot with the 16mm lens that can go in your purse no problem.
It shoots RAW files which was the big selling point for me. I still am not completely comfortable with the focus and I'm not fast shooting manual on it but I've been happy with the images from it so far.
if i were to get a new p&s, I would want the canon g12. they use to have a g11 but that one is hard to find now. i believe that kelly p. might have this camera.
I second the Panasonic P&S. They are fantastic cameras, and very short shutter lag for a p&s- and the zoom is amazing. My husband has the one listed above, I have his older one and they are great p&s cameras.
I've been in the market for a good p&s the past few months cos while I love my Canon Ixus, I need an upgrade. I'll be getting the iPhone when it's (rumored to be) released in March.
These are all worth taking a look at. I just use my phone pics for day to day use - but have been interested in just getting a point and shoot in addition for my DSLR
I have canon dlsr & canon g11. They are superb! But these days I am with iPhone 4s all the time. It's handy especially when you wanna get a quick shot.

I don't carry a point and shoot anymore. My iphone replaced it and it takes great photos (except in poorly lit situations).
Another reason you need a smart phone, Ursula :)
I am in the same boat as dapayne, I hated the blurry pictures, the huge flash on a p&s, if I don't carry my 7D then I use my iphone.....

ursula - my coworker (who does photography on the side) highly recommended this camera: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-LX5-Digital-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003WJR69E. it's the size of a p&s but shoots in raw and gives you manual control.

Yeah Diane, that is certainly a big part of my reasoning, LOL

I sold my p&s about 6 months after I got my phone.
I have a Canon Powershot SD1100IS I'm not sure what the equivalent is now but I'm pretty happy with it being a P&S. Obviously it's no DSLR but I can control most settings and it can open up to an aperture of 2.8. I forgot my DSLR once when we went on vaca and took all the pictures with this camera you can see them in 3 posts on my blog

I got a Canon S95 IS (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-S95-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003ZSHNGS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326411749&sr=8-1) after looking around and reading this article http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm. There is a newer model but he recommended this one because it does better in low light, going as wide as 2.0. It also has manual and raw capability.

Friends have been suggesting the LX5 too.
ditch the point and shoot. they're going the way of the dinosaur.....
iPhone!!
I love my new P&S

There's also a waterproof version. It shoots HD video, has really nice stabilization.

which iphone are you looking at Kate? They just released on through Verizon in the last few weeks I believe.
