I like that Scrapbook Trends has general calls so yes, I will scrap a LO to try and get published . . but it is also a story I wanted to tell and something I would have scrapped anyway, I may just focus on what the call is for. Especially easy w/ all their baby calls and twins at our house :). I do tend to keep my kits together for this reason too.
nope. I scrap for me, not magazines. Plus, I have tried submitting to SB Trends several times and never had anything picked up. I know my stuff is simple, but I also know it's not that bad. So I tend to think they play "favorites" there. I have given up on them.
I have been just submitting what I've already made for the calls too lately, but I do try to scrap with a kit only with the idea that should the right topic come up for a call I'll have it ready to go.
Monica I submitted for a very loooong time before I had anything picked up, probably close to a year. They didn't play favorites w/ me, since I am basicially a "nobody" in the scrapbooking world. There is room for all types of styles!
I have made some specifically for the challenge calls they have every month if I really like the challenge, but I rarely scrap with just my kit anymore.
I have before, but not recently, I have actually been forgetting to submit lately.
I find with SB trends I'm either hot or cold, sometimes it's 2 or 3 a month, others it's nothing. Monica I don't know if this will help, but try submitting for the not as popular topics. Like Jamie said, try doing the challenges or the sketches. I think those categories are probably less full then say baby or sports. I've done that before and gotten a few picked up.
I look at the calls and if it sparks an idea - I go with it!
I don't purposely try to use Studio Calico kits for publication, but since I use my kits say 75% of the time on my layouts, it does happen more frequently than not.
Keep trying Monica, it blows hot and cold for everyone! I think it all depends what they are looking for and what is submitted. I never scrap for a call, I just submit whatever fits a call. For me, it's not fun otherwise.
Okay, I won't lie...
I very rarely time to find time to scrap with my SC kits. Most of my work is DT work for another kit club (hence my totally empty gallery here). BUT...when I DO scrap w/an SC kit I will usually look at see what ST has for upcoming calls. If I have the photos to fit something they are looking for, I'll definitely make it in hopes of getting it pubbed. Who can resist the publishing credit??!! Now...I haven't actually DONE this in like six months...so I need to get on it. ;)
And Monica, I always say that it's one editor at one given time looking at your work. If it's not exactly what they are looking for at that exact moment, you are out of luck. It doesn't mean it's not quality or that they won't like it or choose it another month (or another publication). I submitted a layout to ST like four times once with no luck, then randomly submitted it to CK (who NEVER publishes me, at least not compared to ST) as a general submission and it got picked up. It's all in what they are looking for that day! Don't get down! Just keep submitting! :)
As i only buy SC kits (with the execption of the whole AT line) thats all i ever use, i never make a layout for a call as i think that takes the reason of scrapping away for me, if i force a layout i never like the end result either.
I do not scrap with the intent to be published. But when I submit to ST, I search all my SC layouts first because then I get paid in some way at least.
Thanks for all the encouragement! I feel like such a complainer now, but it is very discouraging when you try time after time and nothing gets picked up. But I'm not going to quit - going to take your advice and keep trying!
ya know Monica, I also find that if I submit, I tend to require more of myself. I end up challenging myself to do something new and that is when something publishable comes out, if that makes sense. I do hope you won't be discouraged. And just so you know, I often submit 10-15 layouts a month. If I get one or two picked up that is good. So submit a LOT. And don't be afraid to submit the same layout from one month to the next. I did that the last two months. The first time it got passed but this time it was picked up. Who knows what will get grabbed.
Just wondering if anyone specifically does this? I do sometimes, but I often forget. It's always so excitingwhen an SC LO get's pubbed at ST
I don't usually make pages specifically to get published, but I often use kits when I scrap so it worked out for me once. =)
I just submit things I have already created that seem to fit the call. :)
Nope, never.

Sometimes it can take a while to break in, Monica--definitely took me a good few months!

No, but then again I've only submitted once :) I think forcing a theme takes the fun out of it.

I'm with you Sarah - for layouts I just send what I have that fits. Sometimes I create projects for card magazine calls, though.

Oh yea - I'm with Valerie... I do make cards for calls. But then I always have a card stash and I like that.

Monica im with you there, i submit ALL the time (well when i remember) and nothing in a mag yet, only online mags so far
