The description says "3x5" but I have read on other posts that they do fit? The large press really just seems to big for me...

I have the compact and the area within the 4 foam corners is 3 5/8 x 5 1/2. I wish I had a background stamp to try for you but wanted to at least provide you with those measurements. HTH

On that other thread someone said it's about A2 envelope size. I have the large one and it was bigger than I thought i'td be but still works great. I haven't seen the smaller one "live". :)

I have the small one and the background stamps do fit on the plastic, but only if you place it overlapping the grid marks. I will take a photo to show how it fits. Also, the very corners of the background stamps kind of poke into the foam feet, but it doesn't seem to impede the stamping in any way. ( I am not a perfectionist stamper)

If you turn the background stamp vertically on the stamp press it fits perfectly and it won't touch the foam feet. I have the small one and my Background stamps fit.
