And i would love your suggestions for cute but functional organization. I am definately on the hunt for a cute but functional 12x12 tray. Any suggestions?
My scrapbook room is in what should be our formal living room, but I would like to move it into our family room. I love my room now, but feel cut off from everything going on. I'm anxious to follow this thread and see some cute ideas.
We have a formal living downstairs and never use it but I want it to look pretty so it was not an option for me, we have a family room upstairs and my craft area is there. I can scrapbook, while everyone is in there or during movies. You can see it all here:
target has trays that are about 13x17. i think they currently have them in white and black - you can find them in the kitchen section. i love mine for holding kit papers!
i'd start by finding containers and shelves that you love, and then brainstorming the best way to use them with your stash!
Organizaton-my favorite, sorry this will be long, but I love craft organization, makes me super excited!
I love Lisa's suggestion of finding a large storage shelf, dresser that you love. One piece that you are in love with will go a long way and you will smile every time you see your space. I think you should first go through all of your stuff and figure out how much, what kind of storage you need and write it down, sizes, amount, all of it...then search secondhand, Craigslist for things. I should mention that you will also want to measure the space you have to work with, include outlets, windows, etc...draw up a little room sketch, it can be crude, but it will help a lot, graph paper is great for this. Also ask friends and family, someone might be getting rid of a table, bookshelf, dresser that you can use or makeover for minimal investment into a treasure that you will love for many years to come. Make sure you decide if you want a sit or stand up scrap space, do you need a computer space? die cut machine? Cameo, etc...? Also, those trays Lisa mentioned are super cute at Target. The Super Target in Raleigh (my favorite store ever) has a lot of round and rectangular trays on clearance or sales right now, getting rid of summer stuff, ironic because it is still super hot here. I also am a fan of small, white, porcelain containers. You can find a ton for $1-$2 each at Target, Pier 1, World Market, and Ikea. They are great for sorting buttons, brads, small embellishments, anything really. There are so many inspiring scrap spaces out there, You tube is great, also love the workspace Wednesday posts on Studio Calico. Good luck, I hope your new space is lovely and exactly what you are looking/ hoping for. Let us know how it turns out and post pics please, love, LOVE scrapspace pics.
Yes it does really work for me. I am starting to change it up a bit. I got rid of the two black tables and bought a large solid wood desk off of craigslist for $20. After getting the plastic drawers I found I like the stuff on my desk and this newer bigger desk allows for that. I got rid of my hubby's desk so he's out of luck now. lol
With this being a family room it was more about being comfortable and easy access, since it's up stairs I never have to worry about guests seeing it unless I let them.
Glad to know that you are making it work for you. $20 for a desk is awesome. My space is in our family room, and is visible from the front door (eeeek), at least the door is 20 feet away from the door, but Imake it work, and I find I scrapbook 10 times more than when I had a huge scrapbook room upstairs at our old house. It also inspires me to keep the area semi- picked up, so I actually reorganize/ clear off after every project ( it looks like a little hurricane went over my desk sometimes, LOL.)
I live in London so space here is a premium! I keep most of my go to products in a set of 12x12 drawers
I scrap standing so I use the top as a table
then in my dining room I keep all my other things
I do recommend making scrapping a part of the family
I tend to scrap in the evenings and being away in a room would not work for me
Where did you get the 12x12 shelves siggy? They look great
Generally Ikea is my friend - expedit desk combined with expedit shelves with Alex drawers underneath is what I use - holds loads and everything in easy reach with limited floor space
Hi Laraco
thanks I love these and I organise my stuff by colour so it works for me
then the ones next to them are for my alphas - although since I have taken this picture I have bought 10 more!
If you are based in the UK you can get them for Storage for crafts
here is the link
http://www.storage4crafts.com/shopx/home.php Its not pretty though. we are moving house soon and I think I might get one which blends in more with the living room - like with doors to hide away all the mess!
I think its great just the way it is...doors are always nice, but you look organized, and if your scrapping, that is all that matters. I love how everything is color-coded and that you can see through to glimpse that, it totally made my night.

I use my Ikea Raskog cart for my scrappy supplies in the living room. :)
