Blech, I hate to say it, but I hate Chicago. But if you totally have your heart set on it, you shouldn't visit without seeing the Museum of Science and Industry. |

Lisa, I just visited Chicago for the first time, and I fell in love with it. I live just over 3 hours from San Francisco (on a good day with no traffic), and visit there as often as possible. So if you love SF, I think you will likely love Chicago as well. I just wandered around on my own while I was visiting and was amazed at how friendly and helpful the people were (very similar to SF) because I thought it would be more like the East coast cities. The two things that I didn't see that I wish I would have are Navy Pier and more of the lake (which could have been accomplished at the same time.) I caught a glimpse of the lake while I was wandering around Buckingham Fountain, but I wish I would have had time for a little more. Oh and I remember being told that I had to try Garrett's Popcorn, and I didn't regret making that stop. (They are everywhere, so it's not hard to find one.) It was actually my lunch one day. :] Enjoy your trip if you decide to go! - amy :] |

Lisa: I'm a native Chicagoan, so naturally I have nothing but good things to say about the city I love. Some good suggestions have already been made and I love Amy's response because she mentioned something that may seem insignificant until you try it and I hope you do. I'm talking about Garrett's Popcorn. You must try it...but do not go for the regular flavors. You must, must try the mini-mix. It is a mixture of the carmel and cheese. You will get the sweet and the salt and it's pure heaven. Just get you a small bag to try first, I would be very surprised if you didn't share my passion and those of thousands before you. Ha.
Ah, I could go on and on. - Aleida |

Garrett's Popcorn update: The Michigan Ave store closed. They plan on reopening in Water Tower Place on Michigan Ave, but probably not before November. The other locations are still open. For great skyline views, try the Adler Planetarium or along North Avenue Beach. Also the zoo has great views of downtown. You must see the "Bean" in Millenium Park just off Michigan Avenue. It is a huge stainless steel jelly bean shaped sculpture with fantastic photo ops. There are beautiful gardens, a cool fountain with towers that have faces, and awesome views. A favorite scrapbook store is Windy City scrapbooks on Clyborn Ave in the Lincoln Park area. Sheila |

There's a bar on top of the John Hancock building, and if you go there and get a drink, you don't have to pay to go separately to the observation deck. A good option for viewing the night lights. The best view is supposedly from the women's bathrooms (so make sure to take a peek from there too.) I haven't been there before, but I heard that Windy City Scrapbooking (actually in the city) is supposed to be a great store. I'm sure others would have a better review. Ann Sather's is a MUST for breakfast. Great cinnamon rolls & yummy pancakes! (Several locations too!) http://annsather.com/restaurants/locations.shtml - http://scrapbookourlife.blogspot.com/ |

I second Portillo's for the hotdogs and the italian beef (get it with sweet peppers), oh and Paul LOVES the chocolate cake milkshake! Also love the Bean (take a pic of you taking a pic of you). The nearby gardens are great. My kids loved Shedd Aquarium. Sometimes the different museums have free days. I'll see if I can find more info on that. Does anyone know how early they start Christmas window displays? Would they be doing those already? - Rachel |

For some odd reason and not intentional, I keep forgetting about the Bean in M. Park. You can do that on route to Navy Pier as it’s in close proximity. Sear’s Tower is further south west of the loop on Adams & Wacker Drive. Now if you do the famous Signature Room at the Hancock Tower which his across from Water Tower place (a famous mall) on the north end of Michigan Avenue, you can see amazing views that include Lake Michigan. Get a drink there, it’s gorgeous and very sophisicated. I think you might prefer that view than the ones at Sears. But that is just me. Windy City Scrapbook is on Clybourn which in recent years has turned out to fun place to hang and shop, and eat in that area. Around there I believe is the Steppenwolf Theatre (if you are into theatre) where John Malcovich and Gary Sinise used to play at. I’ve never been to Windy City Scrapbook as they were not around when I lived there. I will go there when I fly up to see my friends. Old Town is also a cool artsy place to walk around. That is around North Avenue & Wells. There is another famous inprov theatre there which the name escapes me at the moment and a comedy club further south. gosh I would love to play tour guide with you. If you love to eat like I do, I would take you to some other restaurant, little known with great, great food and ambiance. If you like tapas...Ibericos on Chicago Avenue and LaSalle is the place to go. There is another place on Halsted street, forgot the name but I like Ibericos better. Just a matter of taste I guess. Annie, thanks for your post...you hit the nail on the head. Chicago is my other “boyfriend.” ;) Aleida |

For tapas: http://www.cafebabareeba.com/chicago/ that is the one whose name I had forgotten in my original post and this one below is my favorite place. Get the sangria and the papas bravas. which are spicy potatoes...yummy.

i live in chicago and agree with everyone. the christmas displays may be up by the time you go, it seems to get earlier and earlier every year. there is also a garretts on madison & state right across from sears. i don't think they will still have them in November but water taxis are a new thing on the chicago river. everyone keeps mentioning the cubs another pizza place that was not mentioned is lou malnatis which i love. i am not big fan of gino's east. if the decorations are up by then you will definitely have to check out macy's window and tree. - ![]() |

Oh we have a southsider in the house! I didn't mention the southside because I was only a southsider for 2 years of my 38 years in Chi-town, so I don't know much unfortunately of the greats the southside has to offer. Yes...the SOX however they have a new stadium, sorry but I miss Cominsky. Now it's gone like 2 or 3 dumb ass name changes. Yes, but we cannot over look the great Chicago White Sox at all, so I wholeheartedly agree. Malnati's as in Lou Malnatis I believe is also good pizza, nice deep dish. My husband loves L. Malnatis. My best friend lives in Bridgeport where i believe the great Mayor Daley is from. Nice area that is evolving. Not too far is the University so there are a lot of fun student hangouts there. - Aleida |

which is not the only baseball team this great city has, I am a WHITE SOX fan (you know the team in this city that won the World Series) but in November the season is over. I am a lifelong resident of bridgeport so there are a lot of great little neighborhood places around the park for awesome hot dogs and drinks.
*I do have a blog...but it's private. :( Let me know if you'd like to read it!
