You always have the best 2 page layouts with lots of photos....mind sharing your technique? Do you start with all the photos first then add the extra goodies? I love this! =)
Well, I don’t think that I have much of a technique. But here is my typical process…
Once I figure out my topic of choice for my page, I create a new folder, go through all of my pictures, and copy and paste my favorites into the new folder. I typically have about 20-30 pictures that I have chosen, so then I go though and delete the duplicates that kind of look the same and continue to narrow them down to a more manageable number. I still tend to have 12-15 pictures to work with. I keep engineering grid paper nearby where I sketch out a 12x12 layout. I start by picking my 1 or 2 pictures that are my favorites. Those usually will be the largest on my page. Then I will look at the orientation of the pictures that I have left… vertical or horizontal. Then I just try to sketch them out on my grid paper trying to make them fit. One of the easiest ways to pull a page together is if I can size them all the same. All vertical, all horizontal, or all squares. Then, group them together. I am a huge fan of sketches. When I look through magazines, I tend to “memorize” my favorite layouts. A lot of my pages are based on other people’s designs which I have stored way in my head. Becky Higgins’ sketches are a huge help for me. Total fan here! I just alter and change a sketch to fit my needs. Once I have a basic sketch for my page, I size them all in PSE and get them printed. Sometimes, I follow my sketch to a ‘T’… sometimes once I get my pictures in front of me, I will change it up to something completely different. It just all depends. Once I have the pictures in place, I think about embellishing it. I go through my stash and play. Trying to figure out what I like best. I usually keep it to about 1-3 extras per page. Circles of pattern paper are one of my absolute favorites! Easy to do and I think they add a lot without making all the pictures look like a mess. (To me anyways )But that is about it. Sometimes I love my results, and sometimes I am just happy to have the memory preserved even though the design just didn’t work out for me Thanks for asking, San!
