Sunday Sketch | Emily

This week, our layout sketch is an 8.5x11 layout with a grid design perfect for lots of photos. Our card sketch features a trio of diamonds, and our Project Life sketch uses some stars to highlight your journaling. Creative Team member, Emily Branch, is joining us this week & sharing her take on our card sketch. Be sure to follow Emily here at SC to see more of her work and keep up with her.

First, let's look at this week's sketches - our 8.5x11 layout sketch comes from Loredana Bucaria's Summer Review layout:

Our card sketch comes from Emily Branch's Dotted Thank You card:

And our Project Life sketch comes from Lisa Truesdell's May 2014 spread:

Here's Emily's take on our card sketch:

I love layering elements and building up a design, and sketches are perfect when you're feeling creative and want to play with some paper, but don't know where to start, so this sketch was perfect for doing all that. The sketch has a great balance of positive and negative space, and is designed to draw your eye to the sentiment.

In the original sketch, the card's base was embossed gold dots. For this card, I wanted an equally easy background that wasn't too busy, so I stamped the asterisk from the Birthday stamp set, and embossed a gold dot from the Penny Arcade set in the middle of the asterisk.

The original card that this sketch is based on used a die to cut the felt into three squares, but in this card I wanted to do something different. So, I took two separate label dies, and used them to die cut patterned paper from Penny Arcade and Pinball kits, layering them to the card base.

I die cut Birthday from the Penny Arcade paper pad with the coordinating die from the Birthday Stamp set, adhering them to a banner strip that I trimmed from vellum. I layered this sentiment over some stars punched from the Pinball kit's paper collection. The sentiment says Birthday Wishes and I used alpha stickers from Pinball to spell it out. I added a little bit of thread for some soft texture.

I enjoyed designing with the sketch from my original card and hope you find it a fun sketch to work with. I'd love to see how you interpret the design in your own card making.
