Tutorial: Master Watercolor with Masks with Celine Navarro

Hello everyone ! How are you doing ? Ready for a brand new tutorial ? Ok, I know I’ve been playing with watercolor a lot lately (maybe way too much) but I thought I would show you one of my favorite techniques lately. I can’t draw, whether it is with a pencil or a brush, so I never ever envision drawing with watercolor. But there are a few tools that can help you master some drawing with your watercolor : masks.

Follow this easy and simple tutorial and you’ll see how fun it is, and how cool the end result can be !

Gather your favorite mask along with your watercolor (can be any kind of watercolor here) along with a water spray.

Place your mask over your watercolor paper (that you previously trimmed down to 11x11in) and spray water. The design from the mask will be made on your background with water.

Grab some color with a humid brush.

Apply the color in EACH WATER PART on your watercolor paper. You have to use lots of water on your brush as well, but the magic is that the color will be diffused thanks to the water, following the « design » from the mask.

Depending on the mask you chose, you’ll be able to add different colors (or not !) to your background : feel free to experiment with watercolor AND color the way you want ! Just know that nothing will be perfect as long as you’re playing with a liquid medium : it can blend, move in different directions, but the most important is to have fun !
My background isn’t perfect but I just love the way it looks !

Feel free to also blend colors together in the same spot : to create this, the watercolor needs to remain humid so that they can blend.

Let your background dries : don’t use a heat gun ! Otherwise, your watercolor will move and your beautiful colorful background will turn into a nightmare !

Once your background is dry, grab some color with your brush and make some spots and stains.

Everything is starting to look good, huh ?

Once everything is dry, outline some design using a black pen.

Add your photo, a few embellishments, your journaling, of course, and voilà !
I love the look of this background and how easy it was to use. And the best is that you can use any mask you have on hand !

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and I can’t wait to see what you come up with !
