Sunday Sketch | Emily

This week, Emily (SC username, emym), is sharing her take on our layout sketch! Emily makes adorable cards and Project Life spreads. We love seeing her work in the gallery and couldn't wait to see her work with the sketches!

First, let's look at this week's sketches - our 12x12 layout sketch comes from Natalie Elphinstone's Hello Today layout:

Our card sketch comes from Carissa Wiley's sailboat card:

And our Project Life sketch comes from Stephanie Washburn's January Project Life spread:

Here's what Emily has to say about working with the sketches:

Thank you SC for inviting me to participate in the Sunday Sketch challenge this week. Carissa, Stephanie & Natalie…thank you for the inspiration. I enjoyed all the sketches that I even went out of my comfort zone of cards and PL and did my first scrapbook page.

When there is a circle involved in a card sketch, I’m totally in. I couldn’t help myself…I had to make two cards.

Under the Weather: I absolutely loved how Carissa’s card felt like everything was floating in the sky so I wanted to do something similar. The wood veneer umbrella in the March Card Kit caught my eye and I really wanted to use those cute cloud stamps stamp set. With all the grey skies lately, I needed to play with yellows and since this is a get well card, the yellow is a nice burst of sunshine. I like to use little trimmings and scraps in my projects so after I cut the yellow striped paper to size, I used the trimming as a grounding piece at the bottom of the card. I then added the little yellow ribbon from the Water Cooler add-on. I used a circle die to create the off-centered circle on the card. Next was all the stamping: I stamped the top of the wood veneer umbrella with gold ink and then added a little yellow enamel dot to the top and then tied a little bow with some blue twine. I then stamped the clouds in navy ink and some rain drops in soft stone ink and then added the blue polka dot paper from the Office Hours card kit. I stamped the sentiment and then adhered it all to kraft card stock from the Sugar Rush Card Kit.

Supplies: TAFFY: February Card Add-On (My Mind’s Eye paper), OFFICE HOURS: Card Kit (wood veneer umbrella, Paislee Press paper, cloud, rain and sentiment stamps), WATER COOLER: March Card Add-On (yellow ribbon), SUGAR RUSH Card kit (kraft card stock).

Just a little note: In this card, I wanted to emphasize the circle from the sketch by creating a layered medallion. I used several different papers from the Office Hours Card kit and nesting dies to and circle punches to create the different circle sizes. Instead of paper banners, I used two different ribbons behind and on the top of the medallion. This month I gave in to sequins…and ordered every sequin color from the Color Theory line and had to, had to, had to use them. I created a little sequin “banner” using some grey bakers twine and the Yes, Peas! large and small sequins. Then I topped everything off with a cork circle (Hi) from the Office Hours PL kit and a stamped and fussy cut banner from the Office Hours Card Kit stamp set.

Supplies: OFFICE HOURS: Card kit (paper, stamp set, twine), OFFICE HOURS: PL Kit (cork circle stickers), SUGAR RUSH: Card kit (card stock, ribbon, BLUE NOTE: card kit (ribbon).

Remember to smile: I loved how this sketch also had circles! Well one little guy at the upper left corner but who’s counting. For the 4x6 card, I layered a few digital items together, and then stamped the “documented” sentiment on vellum. I tend to do less journaling in my PL spreads and more photos, but I do want to capture those little moments that made me smile each month. The card has a summary of those monthly happy bullet items. For the 3x4 card, I made a little circle tab and then made a few “lines” across the page with the inbox stamp set (I used colored pencils to fill-in the lightbulbs). I then added another sequin banner to this card and then finished the card with a sentiment from the Lollies stamp set from last month’s release).

Supplies: Inbox stamp set, Color Theory Sequins: mint, sunny day, blush crush, silver, SUGAR RUSH: PL Kit (stamp set), TAFFY: February Card Add-On (My Mind’s Eye paper), BLUE NOTE: 4x6 pad, SC Digitals: SUGAR RUSH Printable by In a Creative Bubble, Essentials Printable Shapes.

So Happy Together: What I loved about Natalie’s layout was how everything was grounded at the bottom of the page but you still had this sense of floating with the cloud paper. I don’t have that much 12x12 supplies and most of what I have was from a SC grab bag. I used some of the graph paper that I usually turn into PL cards as the base. I didn’t have any 12x12 cloud paper…but I did have cloud stamps from the office hours card kit and add-on stamp sets so I stamped away using some aqua and ocean colored inks. I dug into my scraps from previous cards that I have made and started piecing them to the bottom of the page; is it bad to say that every piece of paper on this layout was a trimming or saved piecing from a previous project? I then added some ribbon across the bottom and a few circles, hearts and enamel dots along with some SC Printables that I had stashed away. Then, I took a deep breath and added a little journaling to the upper left corner.

Supplies: OFFICE HOURS: Card kit and Water Cooler Add-on (cloud stamps); TAFFY: February Card Add-On (cork hearts); BLUE NOTE: Card Kit (paper, ribbon), DOUBLE SCOOP: Scrapbook kit (transparencies).

We love that Emily took on all three sketches. And how cool that she created her very first scrapbook page with the layout sketch! Thank you so much for joining us this week, Emily! If you'd like to see more of Emily's work, follow her here at Studio Calico.
