Tutorial: Creating a Canyonlands Christmas Card With Lisa Spangler

Hey hey! I'm here today with a Christmas card using a nifty little trick that lets you use embossing powder with dye inks, such as Studio Calico Color Theory inks.

Now normally, you have to use pigment inks when you do heat embossing. But with this little trick up your sleeve you don't have to. Are you ready for the secret?

It's VersaMark ink! Just ink up your stamp first with VersaMark ink, and apply your favorite Color Theory ink right over top. Then stamp + emboss as usual.

It's almost like magic!

Here I used deja blue to stamp “season's greetings” from the Winter Thank You set by Katie Thierjung. I've been noticing navy everywhere lately, so deja blue was my jumping off point.

I used clear sparkle emossing powder for that extra little holiday shimmer. Love that.

Then, since deja blue is a non-traditional Christmas color, I decided to add in some more non-traditional colors to go with it! I grabbed a bunch of different colors to start with, but ended up using glass slipper, blush crush, and lime light.

For added texture, I decided to stamp a few snowflakes just using VersaMark ink and then I heat embossed them, too.

To finish off the card, I added some sequins, twine and a little strip of glitter. And that was that!

Hope you give this technique a try – it's such a simple and easy way to get more from your supplies! xo

Supplies: Stamp Set: Winter Thank You by Katie Thierjung; Color Theory inks: Deja Blue, Glass Slipper, Blush Crush, Lime Light; VersaMark ink (Tsukineko); clear sparkle embossing powder (Hero Arts); twine (whisker graphics); sequins; glitter paper; clear glitter glue; heat gun

Who knew? I always use VersaMark Ink whenever I emboss but only use that and embossing powders with it. Good to know if I don't have the exact color embossing powder on hand!!
