September's featured teachers

Documenter Kit Workshop - Geralyn Sy

Geralyn is the girl behind In a Creative Bubble, where she designs memory keeping products in the paper crafting industry. She has been scrapbooking since 2007, and is passionate about documenting her everyday adventures – both big and small – in paper form. Geralyn lives in BC, Canada and aside from memory keeping and wanderlust tendencies, she also loves photography, design, and daily cups of tea.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

I really love the card designs in this month’s Documenter Kit. There’s a great mix of outdoors-y themed cards and versatile, everyday-themed b-sides, and the color scheme is perfect for fall. From the embellishments, I adore the vellum circles! They are really fun, and they're a great way to add pops of color to a spread.

What she'll be teaching:

In the first lesson, I’ll show you how to use enlarged photos in a pocket page spread. In the second, I’ll share some fun stamping tips and show you how repetition in your design can help unify your spread. Finally, the third lesson will focus on using hand stitching to alter embellishments and to incorporate some texture in your spread.

Takeaways:

Through this workshop, I hope that subscribers realize these kits are versatile and that supplies can be used in lots of different ways. I also hope they see how fun and easy it is to incorporate little details to simple and clean pocket page spreads.

Planner Kit Workshop - Rachel Lim

Rachel is a city girl from the little red dot Singapore. She is a mom to two young boys and wife to a forever supportive husband of thirteen years. Since she was a toddler, Rachel has been picking up paper, pens and pencils and making her own kind of masterpieces. She loves being creative, and believes in the importance of documenting life in every possible way.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

The gold foil stickers and the stamp set from the main kit have all of my attention! Aside from the gold, every inch of the sticker sheet can be used in any form of project! And the stamp set is both fun and functional, a must-have for any planner addict out there.

What she'll be teaching:

In the first lesson, let’s make a quick and fun list together instead of a typical and boring one. For the second lesson, we’ll work our way through planning out our month, step by step. And for the last lesson, I’ll share with you how a week’s activities and planning is drafted out, together with a helpful digital printable that will keep you on track.

Takeaways:

Instead of feeling intimidated and exhausted by planning out page after page while you should be getting more important things done, working on the basics can be the solution to all. I'll be sharing tips and tricks on how you can upcycle unwanted pieces from your kit and stretch your kit to make it worth every penny spent.

Scrapbook Kit Workshop - Lisa Truesdell

As Studio Calico's Manager of Education, Lisa helps our teachers get their crafty wisdom out of their head and into the classroom, and occasionally teaches herself. Lisa lives the wholesome midwestern life in Omaha with her husband Matthew and their 3 sons (Alex, Ben, & Sam) in a midtown neighborhood filled with big trees and old houses. She’s a 12 year crafting industry veteran who loves making, sharing, and creating.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

Is it fair to say all of it? I love the woodsy color scheme (I am SO ready for autumn), the script washi tape, and the fun vellum circles. I really can’t wait to use the stamp set – I love labels and little words, and I know this set will get a lot of use.

What she'll be teaching:

In the first lesson, I’ll use the Lost River Scrapbook kit to share how I put together a multi-photo layout. For the second, I’ll be mixing in the class printables and talking about grid-based designs. And for the last lesson, I’ll share some ideas for using the Nick alphabet stamp to make a bold background and title.

Takeaways:

More than anything, I want to encourage you to USE your kits. Get it all out, spread it out on your desk, and see what happens. I’m excited to share my process of working with kits as well as some design tips for making well-balanced layouts.
