March's featured teachers

Documenter Kit Workshop - Natalie Elphinstone

AKA One Scrappy Doctor, AKA wife to The Trophy Husband, AKA mother of The Elphie Kids. Natalie lives in Melbourne, Australia and keeps herself busy delivering babies by day and playing with pretty paper at night. She firmly believes in documenting the everyday stories and routines, as well as the big events.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

Firstly, its name! Hello… could it be any more perfect for me?! But seriously, I love all the green tones and the focus on natural elements like leaves and flowers without it being overly "girly" and floral.

What she'll be teaching:

In the first lesson, we’ll take inspiration from the kit cards and create a "back to nature" spread. In the second lesson, I’ll share some of my tricks for customizing those leftover cards that you’re unsure how to include so that you can still use them. And the third lesson is about making the most of your stamp sets to create a themed spread.

Takeaways:

You'll see that creating Documenter spreads doesn’t require a whole bunch of pre-planning. It should be a simple and quick process of adding photos, using up all the products in your kit without a second thought, and journaling your stories.

Planner Kit Workshop - Marie Lottermoser

Marie lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with her husband and two teenagers (a boy and girl), plus their dog and two cats. She's been scrapbooking for many years, and is excited to be on the Studio Calico Creative Team for the first time this year!

Favorite things about the month's kit:

I love the mix of patterned papers, from neutral grays and basic grids to more playful colors and styles. There is something for every kind of project I want to make. The colors are gorgeous, and are definitely getting me ready for spring. I am so excited to see numbers in the planner kit, both in the stamp and also as an alphabet. I can think of many uses for those!

What she'll be teaching:

In the first lesson, we'll focus on how to add a dashboard to your planner pages. The second lesson will focus on creating an envelope for your planner using the workshop's free cut file which can hold receipts, cards, stamps and all of those little paper pieces. In the third lesson, we will be making a special project page for your planner.

Takeaways:

You'll discover how versatile your planner can be and find new ways to store items in your planner, including using dashboards, pockets and envelopes.

Scrapbook Kit Workshop - Neela Nalam

Neela is married to a wonderful man and is mom to two adorable boys, aged 12 and 6. She grew up in Bangalore, India, and moved to Santa Barbara, USA about 17 years ago. Scrapbooking is her passion and creative outlet. She began creating with couple of baby books, but when she discovered the world of online scrapbooking, she just couldn’t stop. When she first came across Studio Calico and saw the projects that were being created by its members, she was blown away. The techniques, products and inspiration were out of this world. She couldn’t help but subscribe to the beautiful kits.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

My favorite element in this kit is the wood veneer butterflies. Close seconds are the chipboard circles and the rubber shapes. In general, the overall feel of the kit announces the arrival of spring, and I love that.

What she'll be teaching:

In lesson one, we are going to keep it simple. No intricate techniques, but just use a 4" x 6" photo and the kit to tell your story. For the second lesson, we will be using grids to form a framework for the layout. In the third lesson, we will pick a favorite item from the kit and make it the highlight of our layout.

Takeaways:

Scrapbooking is all about having fun and getting your stories told. You can create simple layouts, but they can still be beautiful and fulfilling. At the same time, we have all these tools handy, so why not use some of them for some fun techniques and kick it up a notch?!
