November Member Spotlight

My name is Magdalena Hanéll (@ROCKERMORSAN). I live outside Uppsala, Sweden with my husband Christian, who is a carpenter. We have two children. Dante who is soon to be 10 and Nea who is 8. I work full time as a teacher, in 4th grade at the moment. As a teacher I have a passion for English, History and Arts. The school I work at is just a five minute walk from home, and the kids' school is just across the street. It makes our everyday life a lot easier and helps to create time for crafting. My daughter is an avid crafter as well, and we spend many hours at the kitchen table making things. Right now I'm excited to be doing December Daily together. She has her own kit and is ready to get started. I am also a huge horror fan and what I read and watch often makes it onto my pages.

Member Since:

I've been a scrapbooker since 2008, a member of Studio Calico since May of 2011, and a subscriber since June the same year. My first kit was Paper Moon. The first scrapbooking website I found was Two Peas In A Bucket and my favorite scrapbooker at the time was Jen Jockisch. Her layouts are what brought me over to Studio Calico.

Favorite Aspect of SC:

Scrapbooking from a kit has really changed how I work, and I would not have stayed a scrapbooker had I not become a subscriber at Studio Calico. The inspiration from the Creative Team and the amazing community is what has kept me here as well. When I started posting my projects, Ginny Hughes was the first person to start commenting on my layouts and she made me feel very welcome. It took me a few years to find my style, and the kits definitely helped with that. My projects became more consistent in 2013, and I've stuck with my style since. Working with a limited number of products really pushes me creatively, and I find it hard now create from an uncoordinated stash.

Most-Have Product:

I was a scrapbook kit subscriber for many years and jumped on the pocket page bandwagon in 2013. When I started out scrapbooking I made about 20 layouts a month (Yes!) and as I got involved in pocket page scrapbooking it went down to maybe 20 layouts per year. By that time a monthly scrapbook kit was too much product, and I decided to pair down my subscription to just the Documenter kit, which is my favorite product here at Studio Calico. It's super easy to put my pocket pages together with the help of a pre-made kit. They just sort of fall together on their own, as opposed to making a layout which takes much more creative agonizing. I do still buy the scrapbook kit every now and then, when I find one I love. To me it's important to be environmentally friendly and not buy more than I use.

Project Highlight:

Even though I prioritize my pocket page albums, because they document our everyday life as a family, I like my layouts the best. I get the most joy out of making them because I kind of enjoy that creative agonizing. Even my daughter told me the other day I should be making more layouts "because they're much prettier than the pocket pages". My favorite project to date is my paper pieced pineapple layout. I love that it incorporates so many of my all time favorite patterned papers without being overwhelming or too much. Plus I had a lot of fun making it!

Another favorite thing of mine is to participate in and be the teacher of scrapbooking classes. I love getting to take a peak at someone else's creative process, and I'm always itching to start making projects of my own right away. I've also taught four separate classes at Big Picture Classes and I am having so much fun putting them together. I've also been fortunate enough to be asked to contribute to a few classes here at Studio Calico, and I'm always thrilled. Thank you, Laura Kurz (@charmer) for being the first person to bring me into the world of making my own lessons and classes!

Project Bucket List:

Something I've been wanting to make for a long time, is a mini album documenting all the books I read during the year. I want it to be a simple and streamlined process that will make it easy for me to complete the project. I haven't been able to come up with a formula I'm satisfied with yet, but I'm hoping 2018 will be the year for that!

Shout Out!

I have met so many friends here through the years and Studio Calico has truly made me feel like a citizen of the world, and not just my little country. We are all in this together!
