Guest Designer | Nathalie DeSousa

We're thrilled to have the lovely and talented Nathalie DeSousa as one of our guest designers this month and are excited to get to know her better today! Be sure to follow Nathalie here at Studio Calico to keep up with her and see more of her beautiful work.

Hi there! I'm completely honored and excited to be this month’s guest designer! I had the pleasure to work with the "Summit" Scrapbook Kit and "Sugar Mountain" add-on, and I could not be happier to start my creative year with these projects. Thank you, Studio Calico, for having me as your guest this month!

For those who don’t know me, I'm Nathalie (mostly known as Tachita—my nickname since birth), a stay-at-home wife and mom who has been enamored with paper and color since the day my mom gave me a small pink paper pad with scented color pens. After my kids were born, and while searching for ways to keep their memories (other than my journals), I discovered scrapbooking. There is something magical about using paper, color, and texture to recreate a moment in time in a 12" x 12" format—my preferred layout size—or in a page of a Traveler’s Notebook. My page design and style have evolved and continue to transform daily, but I'm constantly drawn to patterns, color, dimension, and texture (hence my love for cut files, mixed media, and stitching). I've been blessed to share some of my work as part of many design teams, workshops, and now as a Big Picture Classes teacher. All these experiences have strengthened my love for memory keeping, and I hope someday I can look back at my albums and relive that moment in time.

Blessed Adventures – Sometimes inspiration is found in the littlest of details—the small “explore” tag was the inspiration for this page. The angle at which the two colors combine in the tag was the starting point for the lines in this page. The folded and stitched edges of the cardstock, along with the limited color palette, make the picture the star of the page.

Be Yourself, Dream Big, & Be Happy – The colors and patterns in the "Summit" Kit’s papers are vibrant, bold, and perfect for documenting a picture of my daughter. The negative space in the black and white picture is the perfect spot to place a large title (all the ephemera pieces came from the "Sugar Mountain" add-on kit), and what better way to emphasize it than cascading multicolor dimensional stars. The color, texture, and dimension are so eye-catching!

2018 TN Cover – Simplicity at its best is a way to define this page. The Conrad alpha stamp set combined with the Mixed Floral stamp set bring the perfect sentiment to the opening page of my 2018 memory keeping system. The small pieces of vellum (from the "Summit" Kit) all are placed so that the attention is set on the title of the page. The red little heart is the “cherry on top” of the page.

Wild and Free - My Personal Journal – One of my favorite pieces from all Studio Calico kits are the stamps. The one included in the "Summit" Kit was perfect for creating this TN spread about our last trip to downtown Toronto with my littles. The circle image was repeated at the edge of one of the pages of the TN and accented with stickers from both the main and "Sugar Mountain" Kits. Placing the picture on the opposite side of the TN balances the spread, and all the red simply adds the right amount of color to the page.

Best Friend – Have I mentioned that I love how easy it is to work with Studio Calico kits?! The combination of papers to create the angular background of the page is easily accented by the textural stitching. The small clusters of embellishments from both the "Summit" and "Sugar Mountain" Kit frame the picture perfectly, while the large script title finishes this simple design.

Wow! Great projects. I think the angular ones are my favorites, but am also loving the TN pages. Thanks for the inspiration!
