Using the Expedition Kits with Barbara Picinich

Hi, everyone—Barbara here to share a little bit more about the Brewfest Traveler's Notebook spread. I had initially planned to use the really cool topographic scrapbook paper from the Scrapbook Kit as the base for my TN spread but realized that I had just about exhausted all of my recent outdoorsy photos for all of the other items I made with the kits this month, so I shifted gears. One thing I really loved about the kits this month was that they were not just outdoorsy; there were also some really fun and cool summertime elements to them as well. When I was flipping through the scrapbook papers, the bright orange, yellow, and pink paper really caught my eye, so I decided to use it as my jumping-off point. I knew I could find some sort of colorful summer event to pair it with, and while I was looking through my summer photos, I found the perfect photo to tie into the colors.

Initially, when I sat down to create the spread, I printed my photo full size, meaning it would cover the whole side of the spread. That’s one of my favorite things to do when I make a Traveler's Notebook spread, but I ended up changing my mind mainly because I wanted to add in more embellishments and when the photo is full size, I can only add a few things on top of the photo. I really wanted to use one of the fabric tabs so I was able to do that when I made the photo smaller. It also allowed me more space to cluster some other embellishments and stamps at the top. I used one of the word strip stickers on top of one of the tickets and had that peeking out behind the fabric tab. I also added the sun stamp from the July monthly stamp set to add a little bit more color to the grouping. After I completed this side of the spread, I was really happy that I printed my photo smaller. It stood out more because it was smaller and wasn’t competing with the bold strip paper.

On the right side of the page, I trimmed down the paper to the right size and printed my text on top of one of the Documenter journaling cards. I love how the little word strip "us" sticker fit right inside the block on the card. I finished off the side with one last word strip sticker at the bottom of the card and stamped the month outline using the July month stamp set.

I can’t wait for things to heat up around here and for summer to officially start so it was fun getting in the mood with this layout.
