Sunday Sketch | Mel

This week, Mel (SC username MelBlackburn) is sharing her take on our sketches! Mel's gallery is full of bright and colorful cards and layouts. We love her sense of design, and couldn't wait to see what she'd do with this inspiration.

First, let's look at this week's sketches - our layout comes from Kelly Noel's "Everyday You" :

And our card sketch comes from Stephanie Washburn's clever birthday cake card :

Mel came up with a beautiful project for each of the sketches!

I loved Kelly's fabulous layout, I actually added it to my inspiration book, so imagine my excitement when I discovered that the sketch is based on this fabulous layout. I've been mostly creating 8.5x11 layouts lately so I modified the sketch for this smaller format. I love the title work, so I knew I wanted to keep my title in the same location. I created a smaller cluster of tabs on the left side and instead of using a larger picture I used two smaller pictures. I also loved the idea of using 3 smaller pictures but that didn't work with my smaller format, so this inspired me to layer embellishments directly under the picture. This sketch was such a "joy" to work with.

Supplies: American Crafts White Cardstock, Pattern Paper Printshop Collection by Studio Calico, Wood Veneer Card/Epoxy Stickers/Flair/White Tag/Camera Embellishment/Alpha Sticker all from the Cuppa PL Kit, Gold Stars/Happiness Stamp/Star Stamps/Washi Tape all from the 25Days class mini kit, Magical Speech Bubbles Studio Calico, Star Mask Studio Calico, die cut font created with my Cameo using SP Purkage, Deer die cut Studio Calico

I love the card sketch and thought it would be fun to adapt to the current Holiday season. I created a tree as the focus point of the card and embellished it with stars and enamel dots. I wanted to add a subtle effect to the cardstock and to achieve this I used a star mask with modelling paste. I love the texture that modelling paste brings to a project.

Mel did such a beautiful job taking the layout sketch and adapting it to her more layered style, and we can't get over how cool the Christmas tree on her card is! Thank you for joining us this week, Mel! If you'd like to see more of Mel's work, follow her here at Studio Calico or check out her blog.
