Sunday Sketch I Jil

Tags:

This week, Jil (SC username, Jil), is joining us and sharing her takes on our sketches! Jil's style is artsy and organic and her gallery is full of beautiful projects. We couldn't wait to see her work her fun and artsy style into the the sketches!

First, let's look at this week's sketches - our 8.5x11 layout sketch comes from Geralyn Sy's 23 layout:

And our card sketch comes from Julie Campbell's Paper Quilt card:

And something new, a 4x6 card sketch to use for Project Life™ from Kelly Noel's February spread:

And let's see how Jil took on these two sketches:

Spring Walk: First I want to say thank you to SC for inviting me to lead the way with our sketch challenge this week. Thanks also to Geralyn Sy and Julie Campbell for the amazing inspiration.

I love how easily this 8.5X11 sketch translated to a 12X12 page. I played around with the triangle background paper, cutting it and piecing to together to work with this design. I created the center strip with the spring flowers BG vellum tape, edging it with skinny black washi. I also added a few vellum strips to the cut-apart cards and the background to tie everything together. I loved combining the pale woodgrain of the paper, the wood dots, and wood-edged Dear Lizzy buttons with the spring colors that matched the pink of my granddaughter’s dress and the green of the trees behind her. Making the main word of the title gold gave me the excuse to work in a little bling, including some gold floss (from the January card kit) around the photo.

Supplies: Sugar Rush scrapbook kit, Gum Drop add-on, Rock Candy add-on, Taffy card kit add-on, gold twine from Copper Mountain card kit, SC Woodgrain 12X12, LemonLush wood veneer shapes, LemonLush Golden Die Cut Leaves, LemonLush 6X6 paper pad, Plus One Amy Tangerine Mixtape, Wanderlust roller stamp.

Devoted to One Another:I found it a little more challenging to work in the 8.5X11 format, probably because I’m more typically a 12X12 scrapper, but I wanted to give it a try. I love the natural sun-flare in this photo of myself and my mom, and I tried to mimic it with circles and hexagons punched from the new LemonLush vellum plus a big dose of sequins.

Supplies: Gum Drop add-on kit, Rock Candy add-on it, LemonLush vellum pack, LemonLush Acetate Butterfly Shapes, LemonLush Adhesive Gems, Project Life black pen, SC shop white tag, Essentials Flag Clip (green), Color Theory Sequins (coral), SC shop sequins in green and yellow, SC Essentials Alpha Stickers (gold), October Afternoon letter stickers, Plus One Amy Tangerine Mixtape, circle punch, hexagon punch, green twine.

Many Happy Returns:I horizontally flipped the card sketch. I love grids, but my style is pretty organic and wonky, so I gave myself permission not to worry about straight cuts or even-spacing. I knew I wanted the balloon stamps from the Taffy card kit add-on to be my focal point, and I had fun creating the balloons with the wonderful new Color Theory inks and a two-tone stamping technique that Jennifer McGuire demonstrated recently on her blog. I wanted the sentiment to be tiny, so I pulled an old set from my stash for that. I pieced the mosaic from bits of LemonLush paper, edged each of my pieces with red, added some red embellishments left over from my Copper Mountain kit, and then did a little decorative stitching in green. I knew random stitching for me would work better than attempting neat lines around each box.

Supplies: Taffy card kit add-on, LemonLush 6X6 paper pad, Copper Mountain PL kit, Color Theory Enamel Dots Neutral, Color Theory Ink (Sunny Day, Mint Hint, Emerald City, Something Blue, Deja Blue, Clean Slate), Snippets Punctuation wood veneer, Ladybug Chalk Edger.

We love how Jil stuck to her more artsy organic style working with these sketches & really made them her own! Thank you for joining us this week, Jil! If you'd like to see more of Jil's work, follow her here at Studio Calico.
