Weekly Challenge | B&W and Color Photos with Erica

This week, our member Erica (username elhernandez), is challenging you to mix up black & white and color photos for your next project. We're excited to turn our weekly challenges over to the SC community! Check in each week as we ask one of our members to inspire you with a challenge based on one of their projects from our member gallery. Be sure to follow Erica here at SC and visit her blog to see more of her work and keep up with her!

Hello! I’m Erica and I’m so thrilled to have been asked to share my layout with you today. My daughter recently turned 6 (going on 16, of course) and I spent a few minutes with her taking some photos while asking a series of interview questions. It’s something I try to do every year on all of my kids’ birthdays. I love the expressions that different questions generate and feel like it’s a good way to capture how their personalities change from year-to-year in both photos and words. I tried to take a variety of shots - from close up to full-body, and really loved a variety of them for different reasons. I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to keep them in color or go black and white so I did one of my favorite things and used both! I wanted them to be the star of the page so I simply cropped them and planned their positioning in PSE before printing. I filled in the gaps with some very subtle patterned papers. I thought about how to include the Q&A journaling and in the end, went with a flip up panel. My challenge to you this week is to include a mix of color and black and white photos on your layout - simple! Have fun…I can’t wait to see what you do!

Now it’s your turn to create a project based on Erica's challenge! Share your new project for the challenge in the SC gallery (add the hashtag #SCchallenge to make it easier to find!), then link up your project in the comments of this post by September 22nd and to be entered to win a $5 gift card to the Studio Calico Shop! This week's challenge winner will be announced in the October 4th Layout of the Week post.

I love the whole concept of this page, and you've done it really beautifully as well. I'm sure your daughter will appreciated looking back at all these layouts in the future.

I rarely print black & whites, but the photos I used were from my sister's 50th birthday, and there was a professional photographer on hand. She provided several lovely black & whites from the event. http://www.studiocalico.com/galleries/138129-love-hugs

Love that you interview them on their birthdays :) Do you have any goo questions to ask a 3 year old? I always mean to do this, and I'm sitting here trying to find inspiration for a project (while the guys are talking shop downstairs haha) and this is perfect! Totally going to get started on a layout, I just need some questions :)
