Member Spotlight | andreahoneyfire

This month, get to know Studio Calico member Andrea Martin (andreahoneyfire). Andrea lives in the Florida Keys with her husband and son. Learn more about about Andrea below!

My name is Andrea and I'm addicted to paper. I'm mother to the sweetest boy whose ever existed, married to the most amazing guy on the planet. I'm a very lucky lady. We live in the United States on a small tropical island in the Florida Keys, just a few miles north of Key West. By day I take care of plants at a local nursery, and by night I lose track of time in my Scrap Room. When not working or creating, I love spending time with my little family. We're homebodies and love working in our yard, watching movies, and more recently, building Lego monstrosities. When I get the time, I feed my adventurous soul. Last year my husband surprised me with skydiving for Mother's Day. (he knows me so well). After free falling and parachuting down to my waving husband and son, I've been obsessed with jumping out of planes ever since and working toward my skydive certification. A few moths ago, I completed a SCUBA Diving course and was amazed at all the beautiful marine life that I didn't know existed. Next on the agenda......going on a 7 day hike with my hubby up the Appalachian Trail . I've always loved trying new things and getting the most out of life. I find that I'm a better wife and mother when I'm actively seeking my own personal happiness.

SC Member since:

November 2013 I became a Scrapbook and Card Kit Subscriber with Studio Calico. However, I was obsessively stalking the Blog and Member Gallery for a few months before jumping on the "subscriber bandwagon". In 2014 I added the Documenter Kit to my monthly subscriptions and a few months ago I added the Planner Kit. I couldn't be happier with that decision. I'm mainly a 12x12 scrapper, but love the other kit supplies to add to my pages. I enjoy making cards when the occasion presents itself and make mini books as gifts to family and friends. The Studio Calico kits provide everything I need and more.

All-time favorite past kit or collection:

If I had to pick my favorite kit, it would be PARK AVE. I scrapped most of my holiday photos with my Park Ave kits from last year and had so much fun with the bright non-holiday colors. I feel like the products really pushed me creatively, and my scrapbook style morphed into what it is now.

What do you do when your kit comes?

When I first lay eyes on that beautiful brown box, my heart skips a beat. My 4 year old son loves "helping mommy" open the box and looking at the products. We sit on the couch and go through each kit one by one. We save the Scrapbook kit for last because it's my favorite, then put everything back into their pouches and leave it in my Scrap Room until I get "free time".

What's your go to technique?

Layers, layers, and even more layers. Lately, I've been layering 3-4 pieces of white scrap paper behind my photos, followed by multiple layers of patterned paper. For me, the white paper visually separates my photo from the colorful patterns. This helps to keep the photo as the main focus and showcases the patterns without both of them getting lost within each other.

Share your top 5 products:

- White cardstock for my background

- All 4 of my Studio Calico monthly kits

- Mini Stapler

- Black Paint (to make my own ink for splattering)

- White thread for my sewing machine

Where do you go when your mojo is low?

When having a momentary lapse of inspiration, I like to browse through my photo library on the computer and print out photos that I really want to document. This helps me get excited about creating a page. If I'm still feeling uninspired, I leave my Scrap Room and do a little gardening in our yard. Plants and nature have amazing color combinations I don't see anywhere else in the more material world. Im also routinely browsing through the Member Gallery and love checking out a few of my favorite Creative Team members like Marcy Penner and Stephanie Bryan.
