Scrapbook Techniques | Summit

Starting with a blank page can be an intimidating way to begin a layout. The following scrapbook techniques are perfect for pairing with this month's "Summit" Kit, or just tuck them into your back pocket for a time when your creative mojo is low. Either way, we hope they’ll help inspire your next project!

Use a large photo.

Catherine Davis used an 8.5" x 11" photo as the entire base for her layout, Twin Love. Chipboard alphas for the title, a small sticker, and DIY embellishments cut from patterned paper were all she needed to complete this stunning page! 

By cutting her horizontal photo into thirds, Anna-Maria Wolniak was able to achieve the impact of a large photo on her layout, The Wave. By allowing the photo to stretch across the length of the page and adding embellishments between the cuts, she ensured her photo was the star of the show. 

Create your own one-of-a-kind embellishments. 

On her layout, Explore, Kelly Noel used the Swish chalet vibe from the Summit Kits to inspire her patterned paper cross embellishments. This easy technique makes a bold impact on her layout while providing a colorful contrast to her black and white photo. 

Maggie Massey created her own embellishments for her layout, Love This..., by stamping the circular stamps from this month's stamp subscription set onto various patterned papers and vellum. She then cut them out and scattered them across her page. By doing this, she achieved a consistent look and feel to her embellishments while allowing multiple colors and patterns to be showcased. 

Incorporate negative space into your design. 

By clustering her photos and embellishments into the top right corner of her layout, Find Your Wild, Anna-Maria Wolniak was able to use negative space in the lower left corner of her page to achieve balance. We love the added interest it creates! 

Catherine Davis surrounded her photo and title with negative space on her layout, She. The result is a visually stunning design with all the emphasis on her photo!

Arrange large embellishments together for a bold impact. 

Marcy Penner arranged her large tags from the Summit Kit together in the middle of her layout, First Snow // Summit. The stitching on each tag provided added interest and texture to her page! 

On her layout, The Crew..., Maggie Massey created a grid design in the middle of her page using her photos, large embellishments, and title. This composition provides a simple design with a striking effect. 

Mix-and-match your title. 

On her layout, Be Yourself, Dream Big, and Be Happy, guest designer Nathalie Desousa combined several font sizes, texts, and colors, as well as a cork ampersand to create her title. This title provides movement and dimension on her page.

Anna-Maria Wolniak also combined different fonts, colors, and material for the title of her layout, Hugs and Kisses. The title pops off the page!
