Guest Designer | Missy Whidden

We're thrilled to have the lovely and talented Missy Whidden as one of our guest designers this month and are excited to get to know her better today! Be sure to follow Missy here at Studio Calico to keep up with her and see more of her beautiful work.

Hi, everyone! I’m Missy Whidden from sunny Florida, USA. I’m married to my college sweetheart (almost 19 years) and we have two little girls. They are 11 and 9, and they both have nonverbal autism. Life around our house is never boring, that’s for sure! They are the sweetest girls, and they’re really funny most of the time. They are usually the subjects of my scrapbook layouts.

When I’m not scrapping, I’m a fitness instructor. I teach Body Pump, CXWorx, and cycling, and I love sweating in the weight room. I also love to read and spend time with my family and friends. My younger sister loves to work out, as well, so we get to exercise together a lot.

I began scrapping over 11 years ago when my mother-in-law asked me to help her make a baby book of all my husband’s baby pictures. I was instantly hooked and started scrapping every single picture in our home…haha! My style has changed quite a bit. I love getting messy and adding mixed media products to my layouts. Watercolors, ink sprays, paints, and gelatos are my favorite. I also love using cut files and my sewing machine. I'm so excited to be the scrapbook guest designer this month! Thank you so much for having me!

Hello Love – I wanted to use multiple patterned papers on this layout, so I used one as a background and then cut strips from two others. I created a vertical striped design and then used white gesso over it. I used some ink sprays and watercolors over that to create a fun and messy background. I used some of the large aqua chipboard alphas as a big design element and as my title. I fussy cut some flower clusters from patterned paper and layered them around the photo. I also used a flower cluster down at the bottom along with one of the kraft die-cuts and pom pom ribbon. I machine stitched a lot on the background for added texture. I really love the fun metal embellishments…especially since they have adhesive on the back!

The Story of J & M – I began this page with the fun scalloped stamps. I love creating my own backgrounds with mixed media goodies, so this was a lot of fun. I first stamped using some black Archival ink and then filled in some of the open scallops with the coordinating stamps using Distress Oxides. I used those same inks on plastic packaging to smoosh the color around. I love how it turned out! I wanted to use the aqua chipboard alphas as my title, so I went with three smaller photos which I stacked on the right. I layered in a few of the black and gold die-cuts and machine stitched through them. I finished it off with even more fun stamps and my journaling down at the bottom.

Silly Girls – I used the kraft cardstock as my base for this page. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut my large title, which is in the Impact font. I backed the open letters with a few of the patterned papers in the kit. I love this color scheme! I used some light blue acrylic paint on the right side, which I scraped on using a palette knife. I also splattered down some gold and black ink as well as some watered down white acrylic paint. I layered in a few of the Maggie Holmes stickers around the photos and stamped the date on a label sticker at the bottom. I fussy cut two small border strips from one of the 4" x 6" cards to add in as a small detail. I finished it off with some small punched hearts and some messy tangled thread from my stash.
