weekly challenge | old and new with Gillian Nelson

Tags:

Hi, guys! It’s Gillian here, and for the past few months, I’ve been hosting an “Oldies But Goodies” challenge over in the Challenge Central Forum, where I’ve encouraged myself and my fellow SC members to look to their older supplies and put them to use. I’ve had a complete ball digging into some of my “vintage” stuff that I’ve tucked away, and it’s so inspiring to see what other people are doing with their previously neglected supplies, as well. Today, I’ll once again be looking to an “old” kit to inspire a layout, but I’m switching things up a bit. I want to combine that older kit with the current Office Hours kit and see how easy it is to make the two kits work together.

Here are the supplies I pulled from Office Hours. Love the happy, whimsical colors in this kit. So perfect for the photo I’m working with. And the blue foam alpha? Yeah, it’s pretty obvious that I’ve given it a work out.

Once I had the Office Hours items selected, I looked to my older kits and decided that the color scheme of the papers in the Spencer’s kits would be a good complement. Here’s what I’ve pulled from Spencer’s:

I love how the oranges and blues in the Spencer’s kits worked so well with the yellow & pink in Office Hours. Spencer’s also has a great woodgrain alpha that’s a nice neutral, as are the cork arrows. They’d work fabulously with anything. Throw in some enamel dots, and I’m ready to mix things up.

I hand cut octagon shapes out of the assorted papers I’d selected from the two kits, including some of the B-sides. There’s a lot of color and pattern going on here, but I tried to offset that by leaving some white space, also. I’m really happy with how all of the pieces worked together. They look to me like they could have all come from the same kit, even.

So to the loyal “OBG Challenge” participants, and to the rest of you, as well, I challenge you this week to use your newest Studio Calico kit, and pair it with an older one from your stash! Make them work together, and inspire us with your combination! I’m betting that you’ll be happy to see how easy it is to do so.
