Tutorial: Creating a Gold 'Welcome Baby' Card with Carson Riutta

Happy Friday friends! It’s Carson here again and I want to share a fun card with you today that I put together using the gorgeous Baby stamp set designed by Peppermint of One Little Bird. Peppermint’s style is so classy and clean and I wanted to make a card that represented that aesthetic. So naturally I pulled out my gold embossing powder and pink watercolor!

I used the supplies you see here, as well as some Mixed Media paper, my favorite is by Strathmore, and a strong white card base. You can use any watercolor set that you have and any pigment ink, the wetter the better.

If you are planning to emboss on a card it is always a good idea to use your powder tool and prep your surface before stamping. I guarantee that you’ll be happier with your embossed results. That done, I began the card by stamping out a pattern in pigment ink onto a 4.25”x5.5” piece of mixed media paper. I chose to use the mobile stamp, as I knew I wanted to color in all those sweet little shapes. When stamping out the pattern, I worked fast to keep the ink wet and I made sure I stamped off the edges of the paper to give it that all over patterned look.

When my pattern was done, I quickly covered my paper with gold embossing powder and heat set it with my heat gun.

Next I set up my desktop for watercolor with some paper towels, my watercolors and a cup of water. I created a light pink color by mixing my bright pink with some white and some water. I then covered my card with clean water. Starting from the bottom, I applied the light pink in an all over wash. Keeping the strongest color at the bottom and fading to a lighter color at the top. I then let the card base dry, using a thirsty (dry) brush to pull up any puddles of watercolor that may collect on the edges or inside the shapes.

After letting my card dry completely, I used my watercolors and a very small brush to color in the mobile shapes. This took a little time, but gave me that calming stress relief of coloring.

With the card base done and drying, I set about to create my sentiment. On a stamping block, I combined the open heart stamp with two of the sentiment stamps to create a custom sentiment. I stamped it in pigment ink onto a piece of vellum and embossed it in gold. I then die cut it with a 2” circle die. Then I decided to emboss the open heart with some pink powder, using my amazing embossing pen, and while I was at it, I embossed a few of the shapes on the card base as well to add a little more shine!

To finish the card I mounted the vellum circle onto another circle of blue paper from the Savannah paper pad and mounted them both on a piece of adhesive foam.

Thanks for reading today, I hope I’ve inspired you to crack out your paints and your powders in your next card making adventure. See you soon!
