SC Kit Announcement
Tags:Since its beginning, Studio Calico has been on the forefront of modern memory keeping. Our goal is, and has always been, to provide products and inspiration to document memories with fresh and trend-forward designs. And as we head towards our 11th year anniversary, we’re keeping our focus on that vision.
Our June kits will be the last release for both our Scrapbook and Planner Kits. This wasn’t an easy decision to make—our Scrapbook Kit is where it all started. There has been a drastic change in the memory keeping industry over the last 11 years, and we are continually thankful for all our loyal customers, their feedback, and the ever-evolving community of paper lovers. Looking ahead, we’re excited to focus our energy on the Documenter Kits, Stamp Subscription, and the NEW Traveler’s Notebook Kits. We invite you to join us for our June reveal tomorrow and cannot wait for July when we reveal the new TN Kit.
Our main goal remains the same: to provide beautifully-designed, custom, and high-quality products to your doorstep each month to help you preserve your memories for years to come. With a change as big as this, we’re sure you’ll have questions. Please leave them in the comments below and we’ll post a follow-up with answers. If you need help with a question specific to your own subscription or status, please reach out to our Customer Service team.
How do I switch to the new Traveler’s Notebook Kit?
- If you are a Scrapbook or Planner Kit subscriber, simply visit the Traveler’s Notebook Kit page and sign up for a new subscription. Our system will automatically convert your Scrapbook subscription status over to your new Traveler’s Notebook Kit subscription.
How do I switch to a Documenter Kit or Stamp Subscription?
- We would be happy to help you transfer your Scrapbook or Planner Kit subscription to our Documenter Kit or Stamp Subscription. Please reach out to our Customer Service team and we’ll make that change for you.
What will happen to the Scrapbook Kit Workshop?
- Our scrapbook workshops will continue, just in a slightly different format. Our teachers and contributors will be sharing ways to combine and use your past kits to make the most of your stash.
What will happen to the Planner Kit Workshop?
- June will be our last planner workshop.
Will there be a TN Kit Workshop?
- Yes! We’re excited to start the new TN workshop in July. You’ll be able to sign up on July 1st with reveal.
I’m a Scrapbook or Planner subscriber—how will this affect my rewards status?
- If you are a rewards member based on length of subscription, you’ll need to transfer to our Traveler’s Notebook, Documenter, or Stamp Subscription to maintain that status. If you’re a rewards member based on your spending, you won’t see any change.
Will you continue to offer Scrapbook and Planner products?
- We will continue to make and curate traditional scrapbooking supplies for our shop releases, as well as planner-friendly products.
What happens if I have a Scrapbook or Planner Kit Subscription and don't opt to switch to a new kit?
- If you don't decide to switch your current subscription to our TN, Documenter, or Stamp kits, your subscription will simply end after you are charged for your upcoming June kit. There will be no cancellation fees, and you don't need to do anything else to avoid future charges.

I must have missed my email. I just started a scrapbook sub, so I’d expect to get an email about it. I would NOT have checked here to find out the commitment I made is no longer available. But I saw something on Facebook about it. I thought it was probably incorrect because I didn’t see a message sent to me as a subscriber. Weird.

I just re-subbed to the SB kit too. An email would have been a better way to make this announcement in my opinion. I've been a part of SC in some way or another since their 3rd kit and I feel a bit disappointed by them not reaching out to the broader newsletter/subscriber base with this important announcement. Perhaps it's scheduled to go out later today as a follow up.
@penny & @iScrap - An email did go out to all current Scrapbook and Planner subscribers. Please contract customer service and they should be able to help.
@iScrap, evidently some people got emails after seeing the blog. I haven’t.
@gluestickgirl, I don’t need any help. But I get plenty of the other emails from SC. Just commenting on the communication process.
I think the disconnect is that I'm not "officially" an SB kit subscriber until tomorrow. But I think "new" subscribers should have been included in the email.
i feel like they could have provided much more notice and alerted potential new subscribers - how many times have we heard that kits are put together 6 months in advance?
@gluestickgirl, I did finally get the monthly newsletter - at 5:57 pm EDT - where the announcement was buried at the end. Very late, but it's there. But it's not a message to me as a subscriber. It's a newsletter about other things with a "P.S." at the end.
hi @penny I'm really shocked at this news myself even though I only get Doc's these days as I rarely have any time. Hope you're doing well..
ah, a missed communication... some things never change. I just came by to see if there was a good July kit to add to my stash and help inspire my Thailand album. Couldn't figure out why there was no scrapbook kit listed! Had to search the blog to figure it out. I'm stunned.

So sad to hear this news. Your carefully curated SB kit started me subbing here in 2011. I haven’t missed one since then. I understand that the business is changing (we lost our LSS in the last year too), and you have to change with anticipated interest. I continue to scrapbook 12x12, so will continue to look for these products (here and elsewhere). I’ll keep my stamp sub (for now...)

My very first kit was Back 40. I'm not sure what year that was, 2010? I stopped subbing briefly but found that I was still buying the kit almost every month so I started up my subscription again late last year.
I'm so sad to hear you guys aren't making the Scrapbook kit anymore. I still scrapbook traditional 12x12 and 9x12 layouts and I don't plan on switching to a TN anytime soon but I hope that you guys will continue to make products I can use. Who knows maybe I will bite the bullet and try a travelers notebook.
I know this couldn't have been an easy decision. I will miss that monthly box for sure. :(

So. Sad. I was just saying to myself as I opened this month's kit "there's just nothing like an SC scrapbook kit!" Womp. Guess I'll get to keep my money now!

Wow, I don't even know what to say. As all of the scrapbook stores around me have closed over the past five years, I've always said "at least I have my studio calico kits in the mail each month". I can't say that anymore. While I understand there is a cost/benefit analysis, I'm so sad that the traditional 12x12 scrapbooks are getting left behind. I too don't like the travelers notebooks with pages decided for you. Such a sad day.

I am really happy that SC will be having a TN kit. As someone who never made 12x12's it's been hard to find a place within the community. I think the longevity of any industry comes from a willingness to evolve. I'm excited for what's to come🙌🏽

Wow - very disappointed as it appears everyone else is as well. I'm surprised that there wasn't a customer survey before this decision was made.

oh boy... this isn't going to be good news for most. I have a question though @gluestickgirl will the travelers kit have the same designs or embellishments as the Doc kits?
Replies to laceyweeks
There will be some overlap in embellishments here and there - though when we do that, we usually do different designs in each kit. It's a necessary evil at times, in order to manufacturer certain items. =) The TN and DOC cards will have some overlap as well, though obviously in different formats.

I can understand why companies make their decision. Trends change. They have to go with what sells and popular demand. Agree with maybe a more plain TN. It would be nice to have the clear pockets added in as well.

Wow, I did NOT see that coming. I’d have thought SB kits would be SC’s bread and butter but I guess now.
Is the 9x12 album format going to be the next to go, if all the albums are discounted and SC isn’t bringout our new colours like in the 6x8?

I hope this will allow SC to head towards a more focused approach, I would like to see a a lot more practical basic product offering that can be used on all types of memory keeping, such as white grid paper, stamps with simple phrases and/or versatile shapes and simple embellishments. I haven't subscribed to a kit for many years but still purchase product, and quite frankly I find the shop to be a huge mess, I click on new or sale and it quickly leads to lots of old party product, cards and other random "stuff" you have been trying to unload months and months. Often I just get bored scrolling and exit the site. If you ever offered a "just the basics kit" I would probably subscribe again.

So if we are not switching to the new TN or DK formats, and decide to cancel our subscription, will our workshops still be available. I have several kits that I haven't used. I love the workshops for inspiration. I have paid for them already. I hope they don't disappear. If I have to keep the workshop subscription at $5.00/month please let me know. I would just like all the facts transparently on this.
Replies to annbazeley
yes, you will still have access to any workshops that you've purchased, and will be able to purchase future workshops should you decide to!

Wow. What a surprise, as there are still so many traditional scrapbookers and now so few kits. I understand shipping is very expensive, but what about a slightly larger kit that comes out every other month? With the option to add on card stock, stamps, etc. in the box for the same shipping cost?

love this idea

I know TN is all the rage right now, but I don’t think it has any sort of longevity. Not just the albums themselves, but the actual format. Who only scrapbooks in such a limiting size? Of course there are a few, but I don’t believe for 5 seconds that the majority of scrapbookers use this size all the time. I bet this fad lasts less time then the planner craze.
I am really disappointed by this and can’t believe the short notice.
Replies to Pippin
I agree! The TN just doesn’t have the durability I’m looking for. I made a smash book for a holiday we took in 2012, so I don’t think this is a “new” idea, but I don’t think in the end, that it’s what the majority of scrapbookers are wanting.

I think you have made a huge mistake. the more I think about this, the more upset I am.

Yikes! Like I said earlier I'm on board w/ the TN style but not necessarily the loss of the Scrapbook Kit (for others as I don't order it myself). Is it possible to explain why, besides the change in trends, that you (SC) decided to make this change? Were you losing money, for example? Maybe if you explain a bit more there would be less upset? (Maybe not). Just a suggestion.
BTW - you're not the first kit club to do this.... I know that the Scrapbook Circle Kit Club did a while back...
I also know that when I clicked on their website they haven't posted since November and their shop is now closed... ::shrugs::

Yes it would be nice to know what led up to the decision to actually shut down the scrapbook kit. April has mentioned that she is sad by the decision, but it just doesn’t make sense. I’m sure there are reasons but I have always felt there was a lack of transparency here behind decisions that hurt my trust in this company honestly. In fact, there were times I felt down right lied to. But I was gaining that trust back and had resubbed to the documenter kit and was considering the scrapbook kit.
Now I’m having doubts again. And I’ve been following this company off and on since the beginning.
@maryjo Oh No! I just started w/ them last October (as a subscriber I mean, of their Documenter Kit)…
Thanks for the info.

I'm sure it was a tough decision! Looking forward to seeing what's next :)
Quick question - I noticed your 9x12 pocket page albums are on sale - is this because you are getting in new 9x12 albums? or are you discontinuing 9x12 products (albums and protectors)? Just wanted to double check as I like the size. Thanks!
Replies to irish_kitten17
They won’t give a clear answer on this! Lots of people have sent conversations and got vague answers.
While we don't have new 9x12 albums on the slate this year (lead time is looooong on albums), we have them in our 2019 plans.

I am so upset about this change! I was doing close to $80-$100 a month with the add-ons included, and I will really miss this. My stamp kit has been less valuable to me, as I was really just using it to augment my scrap pages. I don't document or TJ, so I will definitely be looking for a new outlet for the services I want. I will really miss SC. I think it's a mistake to do this. Please leave the past SB workshop classes up indefinitely as I subscribed to them, too.
Replies to Sbeverly
What she said!
I hope the class workshops are still accessible. We have paid for them, so they should be. Or they should set a deadline so that we can work through them before they disappear.
you will still have access to any classes or workshops that you've purchased. =)
