Documenter Kit Workshop - Laura Wonsik

Laura Wonsik has been scrapbooking since she was 16 years old—almost 20 years! She has a daughter, Ellie, who is the main subject for most of her layouts and a husband, Chad, who has sweetly supported her love for this hobby for many years. She works as a counselor at Miami University in the Student Counseling Service. Other than scrapbooking, she enjoys trying new crafts, watching sitcoms (preferably from the 90s with canned laughter), and eating s’more style desserts.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

The best thing about this month’s kit is the color palette! One of the challenges of working with pocket page spreads is that because there are so many different photos and colors, it can be hard to create a visually cohesive spread. This is one of the roles of embellishments—to highlight certain colors and create balance. This month’s kit is so colorful that it worked great for three different spreads, meaning that it worked well with over 20 photos. Get ready to watch my process as I try new things, change my mind, and just embrace the messy but fun process of creating!

What she'll be teaching:

Over the course of three lessons, I'll be sharing tips for how to think outside the box when using the products from this kit. You'll see me use various parts of the kit together in different ways and you might notice the way that the mood of the spreads change with different photos and stories, even though only one main kit is being used. In the first lesson, we'll talk about balancing color across the spread through photos and card choices, as well as how I make choices about which cards to use. Lesson two will focus a lot on working with the stamp set as well as fussy cutting cards to create new embellishments for the photos. Lesson three will show a unique way to create a title card and will feature cards from the printable set.

Takeaways:

  • Ideas for fussy cutting elements out of cards to use as embellishments
  • How to balance color across a spread that includes different types of photos
  • Unique ways to use the stamp set
  • Ideas for creating title cards using the kit
  • Creative uses for negative or “leftover” parts of embellishments and product sets.

Traveler's Notebook Kit Workshop - Lisa Truesdell

As Studio Calico's Manager of Education, Lisa helps our teachers get their crafty wisdom out of their head and into the classroom—and occasionally teaches herself. Lisa lives the wholesome midwestern life in Omaha with her husband Matthew and their three sons (Alex, Ben, and Sam) in a midtown neighborhood filled with big trees and old houses. She’s an 11-year crafting industry veteran who loves making, sharing, and creating.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

This may sound silly, but my favorite part of the "Great Escape" TN Kit is a tie between the completely awesome custom notebook and (here comes the silly part!) the tiny little circle stamp in the stamp set. The notebook needs no explanation—it’s straight up fabulous. But I really did find myself reaching for that little circle stamp again and again. It made an awesome accent, border, or a fun confetti effect!

What she'll be teaching:

In the first lesson, I’m talking about my approach to using this month’s Traveler's Notebook Kit and putting together a spread with a fun stamped background. In lesson two, we’re tackling making the custom pages work when they just aren’t a great fit for your project and exploring ideas making a spread work when it’s documenting two separate topics. And in the last lesson, we’re breaking out the class digital and taking a walk down memory lane.

Takeaways:

I hope, more than anything, that this workshop for our first ever TN Kit shows you just what a fun format this can be for memory keeping! Whether you’ve been doing notebooks for a while or are new to this fun trend, I’d love to have you leave class inspired and ready to start documenting.

Scrapbook Kit Workshop - Kelly Noel

Kelly Noel has been an art lover her entire life. Scrapbooking was a perfect fit for her, and she started recording her memories in 1997 while in college. She found the online scrapbooking community in late 2004 and was totally obsessed from that time on. Kelly lives in Florida with her husband Tom and their three boys (Jackson, Brady, & Sawyer), and when she's not at one of her boys' baseball games, she's working with Studio Calico's teachers as the Education Content Coordinator.

Favorite things about your kit:

Our new Scrapbook Kit Workshop focuses on using up your stash of old kits, so for this workshop, I used a mix of products from past kits to create my own custom kit. It was a lot of fun getting creative with my choices and choosing things that I'd been anxious to use again or that I hadn't used much of before. My favorite elements from my kit are the die-cut shapes that I pulled from the "Starlight" Kit.

What she'll be teaching:

In this workshop, I'll be sharing tips and tricks for putting together your own kit from your stash. I'm pulling products from several different kits and will share how to mix and match to create a cohesive kit of your own. Then, I'll show you how I put together three layouts with my own custom kit. We'll let the product itself inspire our first project and go crazy with circles. We'll also create a simple stamped background as the base for a project. And finally, we'll create a layout to use up lots of patterned paper scraps.

Takeaways:

If you're anything like me, you don't even come close to "killing your kit" each month and you probably have a giant stash of product just waiting to be used. It's easy to be distracted by new product, but it's so much fun and a great boost to your creativity to dig into your stash and find new uses for that older product. I'm excited to share my ideas for doing just that in this workshop!

Kelly will be joined by three talented contributors this month: Lisa TruesdellAshley Horton, and Marcy Penner. As always, each workshop comes with a free digital item. Check out this awesome cut file Kelly will be using in this month's workshop:
