Documenter Kit Workshop - Lisa Truesdell

As Studio Calico's Manager of Education, Lisa helps our teachers get their crafty wisdom out of their head and into the classroom—and occasionally teaches herself. Lisa lives the wholesome midwestern life in Omaha with her husband Matthew and their three sons (Alex, Ben, and Sam) in a midtown neighborhood filled with big trees and old houses. She’s an 11-year crafting industry veteran who loves making, sharing, and creating.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

This month’s kit has totally earned a spot in my “top kits” list, so trying to pick a favorite thing is almost impossible. I love the color scheme and the adventure theme. It may seem silly, but I’ll say that the labels are my favorite. I anticipate using ALL of them and wish I had a few more sheets! I LOVE good, solid basics like this.

What she'll be teaching:

I'm so excited to crack into this kit with all of you! In the first lesson, we'll be using the main kit and talking about making journaling cards work in 3" x3" pockets. In the second lesson, I'll share ideas on using those customizing journal cards with stamps and embellishments. And to finish the class off, we'll use the label stickers to highlight a trip recap and mix in the class digital to stretch our kit leftovers even further!

Takeaways:

With summer coming up, I thought it would be fun to take the pocket page format beyond everyday recording. I’ll be sharing ideas on doing a trip recap, highlighting a destination, and featuring a special day in your albums. A weekly format is awesome, but sometimes you just need a little more space to showcase bigger adventures.

Planner Kit Workshop - Jen Randall

Jen Randall is a creative soul living in southern California with her two kids and a very supportive husband. She's a former elementary teacher turned mixed media artist who loves all kinds of different avenues to express her artistic side. She loves planning, art journaling, pocket scrapbooking, making mini albums, working in Traveler’s Notebooks, and mixed media. When she's not creating, you can find her spending time with her family, working on DIY home projects, drinking too much coffee, and snuggling up with a good book.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

As always, I was so excited when my Planner Kit arrived. I love all things planner related and getting new items that have been carefully selected to complement each other makes my planning time flow smoothly. The "Expedition" Planner Kit is perfect for summer, travel, vacation, and everyday planning or memory keeping. My absolute favorite part of the kit has to be the Traveler’s Notebook. I love it! The patterned papers are gorgeous with beautiful colors and inspiring design. I just love how versatile Traveler’s Notebooks can be, as well. They can be used as a weekly planner, bullet journal, mini books, travel diary, memory keepers, and so much more. I'm going to use this particular TN for stories related to my son, his darling personality, and various events in his life.

Another item that inspired me and got my artsy mind stirring with possibility were the colorful star stickers. Any icon stickers like stars, hearts, circles, geotags, etc. are always so useful for functional planning. But they are also perfect for adding layers and building embellishment clusters for decorative needs too. The colors are so rich and beautiful. I know I'll use up each and every star for sure!

What she'll be teaching:

In the first lesson, we'll use the "Expedition" Kit to document a story in our Traveler’s Notebook. I absolutely adore this notebook and couldn’t wait to use it. I'm also going to show you how packaging from the kit can be used for layering. Yes—the packaging! Don’t throw anything out. We’ll use these bits to create interest and texture. In our second lesson, we'll use the main Planner Kit and digital class printable for a functional spread in a horizontal planner. I’ll share how I alter embellishments to suit my needs and layer printable items with the main kit goodies. In the final lesson, we’ll use the versatile stamp add-on for a monthly layout where I demonstrate how I create a functional spread and then add in photos. I think this is a great way to start memory keeping in your planner if that is something that interests you. Adding snapshots of your life into your planner helps bring a personal touch to your pages. I can’t wait to meet you in the classroom for some planner exploration!

Takeaways:

Planners are a great way to keep you organized, explore your creativity, and also create a space to document life. In this month’s workshop, I hope you find something new to try or an interesting idea for the colorful kit items. Everyone has a unique artistic voice and finding inspiration comes in many different forms. Maybe this month you’ll add a photo to one of your layouts or alter a sticker to fit your creative need. Perhaps you'll create pattern and depth with stamps or document a story in your Traveler’s Notebook. I know that I'm always filling my mind with new ideas after visiting Studio Calico or other planner community places. I hope these lesson videos spark some inspiration and encourage you to explore new things with your supplies. I can’t wait to see what you create with the "Expedition" Planner Kit!

Scrapbook Kit Workshop - Ashley Horton

Ashley is a work-at-home mom and homeschool teacher to her three children: Madison, age 12, Emma, age 10, and Reese, age 9. She is married to Tyler and her family lives in the Southern US along the Gulf Coast. Ashley fell in love with scrapbooking in 2006 when her first daughter was born. She loved the idea of creating scrapbook layouts documenting her daughter’s photos rather than the traditional baby book. As her love of the hobby grew, she became more involved in scrapbook communities and joined Studio Calico in 2012. Since then, she has worked with many of the Studio Calico kits and taught several classes, as well as provided inspiration as a contributor in other classes, such as Summer of Sketches. Ashley spends a lot of her free time during the week working on multiple aspects of scrapbooking. Her other hobbies include cooking and reading. She loves trying new recipes she finds on Pinterest. Some of her favorite book series include Harry Potter, Miss Peregrine series, and The Bregdan Chronicles.

Favorite things about the month's kit:

This month’s kit includes two of my favorite things: travel-themed products and a teal, orange, and yellow color scheme! I love creating travel-themed layouts, whether I’m documenting photos from a family vacation or photos from local events and activities that we like to do together. The gray chipboard alphas are another favorite in this month’s kit! I love that the neutral color works great with all of the other products and the arrows on each letter are just too fun!

What she'll be teaching:

In our first lesson, we’ll be creating a layout using one of my favorite techniques, fussy cutting! The next lesson will focus on working with a busy background and using the exclusive class digital. In the last lesson, we’ll have fun with a grid design!

Takeaways:

All of these lessons are designed to give you the basics for creating amazing layouts. The great thing about each lesson is that you can change things up to create your own individual projects. These techniques can also be used multiple times with different results by changing up your products, placement of items on your page, and the scale of each technique on your layout.

Ashley will be joined by three talented contributors this month: Anna-Maria WolniakPaige Evans, and Kelly Noel. As always, each workshop comes with a free digital item. Check out this awesome cut file Ashley will be using in this month's workshop:
